Things are not looking good for the remaining scripted shows of The CW, with new reports suggesting that even more will be cut than initially thought. Unfortunately, one of those shows in jeopardy is The Winchesters, the prequel series to Supernatural. Having just had its mid-season premiere, it would be around now that the showrunner would be looking to a potential new season, but as of yet, creator Robbie Thompson has no idea whether a second season is on the cards or not.
The Winchesters is set in the 1970s and acts as a prequel story to the long-running fantasy horror series Supernatural. Featuring Jensen Ackles, who narrates the show as Dean Winchester, it tells of the meeting of his parents, John and Mary, who together searched for their missing parents while falling in love and killing monsters. The series premiere was the most watched debut on The CW since the DC show Naomi, but considering that series did not make it to a second season, that doesn’t really say much these days.

Speaking to SFX Magazine, Thompson commented:
“I’ll say that both our partners at the studio and network have been focused on the same. It is a time of uncertainty for all of us. We don’t know. But what we do know is the task at hand in front of us and we’re really focused on putting forth the best story that we can.”
The CW’s Future Is Changing Following Ownership Changes
The CW
In a pattern that seems to happen across many platforms at the moment, the future of The CW’s programming appears to be in a state of flux. Following Nexstar’s acquisition of the majority shares in the network, many scripted shows have fallen from the slate, and the latest reports suggest that at least one more beyond those known will also be dropped. Having once had a vast range of Arrowverse shows alongside others like Dynasty, Nancy Drew, and Legacies, only a handful remain scripted series. With no word yet on renewals for the new season, which of those will still be here by the end of the year is unknown.
The Winchesters has been a popular enough series, coming off the back of the legacy of Supernatural, which used to draw in around 4.5 million viewers in its last seasons. However, with so many streaming platforms offering wall-to-wall content any time of day, networks have been losing viewers in the hundreds of thousands. This has seen many once-popular shows see fewer returns for their efforts, which has led to many being canceled.
Whether there will be more to come from The Winchesters beyond the end of its first season is something that we, and seemingly the series showrunner, will not be finding out until Nexstar are ready to reveal which shows of the current slate will be getting another run out in the 2023/2024 season. However, one thing for sure is that none of the remaining scripted shows are safe.
