Henry Cavill has promised that his oft-grunting monster hunter Geralt of Rivia will be a lot more vocal come The Witcher season 2, with the actor explaining that he did not want the character to become too one-note. So, instead of continuing his stoic silence and penchant for foul language, Geralt will emerge as a more intellectual presence, thus reflecting the fact he has been alive for 70-plus years.

The first season of Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher introduced audiences to Man of Steel star Henry Cavill as Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. Having now solved all manner of struggles using very few words and a lot of sword fighting, The Witcher Season 2 will pick up right after the first season’s finale, which ended with Geralt taking Ciri to Kaer Morhen, where he was raised and trained to be a Witcher.

“For this season, I wanted to push really hard to make sure [Geralt] was more verbose. … There’s always the risk of a character becoming a bit tropey and just comedic by grunting and saying the F-word, and not being representative of the talent of [The Witcher series author Sapkowski]. Again, I really worked very hard to make him more intellectual, have an expanded vocabulary and be representative of a guy 70-plus years old.”

Season 2 will begin with Geralt being convinced that Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans, and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside. Evidently, Geralt’s adventures will have brought out his chattier side.

Henry Cavill’s performance as Geralt received much praise from audiences, but clearly the actor hopes to do more with the character as the show continues. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich echoed these sentiments in a previous interview regarding The Witcher season 2, revealing that Geralt will go through several changes as he grows closer to Freya Allan’s Ciri all while the second season delves more into his mysterious origin.

“In season one, Geralt is a person who is convinced he doesn’t need anyone else, certainly not in the long term. As a Witcher, as a monster hunter, he doesn’t want to have those connections. Geralt feels like they weaken him,” Hissrich said. “In season two, we throw all of those connections at him. To me, the most exciting thing is seeing this solitary guy learn to become a father. Seeing what he thought he would be good at, and what he thought would be easy, and how that’s challenged… For Geralt, it’s about finding surprising levels of warmth and empathy that I think all of us know were there.”

The Witcher season 2 will consist of eight episodes and is scheduled to be released to Netflix on December 17, 2021. The show has already been renewed for a third season, with several spinoffs also in development. This comes to us from Games Radar.
