The showrunner behind Netflix series The Witcher, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, has hinted that there is more to reveal regarding the sudden departure of Henry Cavill. After leading The Witcher as Geralt of Rivia since the show’s conception back in 2019, Cavill suddenly revealed that he would be walking away from the series, leaving Liam Hemsworth to take over in the fourth season. While various reasons have been put forward to explain why Cavill ultimately decided to walk away, Hissrich has teased that there is more to be revealed…

At the time, Henry Cavill took to social media to reveal that his “journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.” Revealing that The Hunger Games and Independence Day: Resurgence star Liam Hemsworth will " be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf,” Cavill added that he will “pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find."

“We’re going to try and talk about that next year,” a publicist said to NME when asked about Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher.

“That’s exactly what I was going to say!” Hissrich added. “I do have a lot to say and I think that there’s a lot of, you know… we’ll obviously never get into exactly why Henry left, all of the reasons, but I can say it’s been a mutually respectful relationship… So please, please, please come back in six months when we can talk.”

Various reasons for Cavill’s departure have been put forward, including the actor wanting to commit to the role of Superman (a role that has now fallen through), simple contract negotiations not going the way everyone involved wanted, and that Cavill left The Witcher after disagreements with the writers, showrunner, and overall direction of the series.

Until Hissrich reveals more next year, the rumors and speculation are sure to continue.

Liam Hemsworth Taking Over as Geralt Will Bring a ‘New Energy’ to The Witcher

Thus, Henry Cavill will lead The Witcher for the final time in the upcoming third season, with Liam Hemsworth taking over from season 4 onwards. Hissrich for one is excited about the change, believing that the addition of Hemsworth will bring a “new energy” to the show.

“I’m so excited for viewers,” she said. “I think that it’s just a new chapter for us. And I think new chapters bring new energy and that people will find things to love. So yeah, personally, I’m really excited.”

The Witcher Season 3 will find the monster hunter falling upon a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. The Witcher Season 3 does not yet have a release date, but will once again debut on Netflix. The world of The Witcher will first return in the upcoming prequel miniseries, The Witcher: Blood Origin, which is due for release on December 25, 2022.
