6 Kim Possible

Kim Possible is really inspiring because it demonstrates the empowerment in a lead female protagonist (Christy Carlson Romano) that not only thrives in high school, but also routinely saves the world from potential destruction. With her best friend and sidekick Ron Stoppable (Will Friedle) and pet rat Rufus (Nancy Cartwright, also in the movie), countless villains and oppositional leaders get thwarted. Back in elementary school, every other kid either toted a Kim action figure, or dressed in green cargo pants (and sometimes even a black turtle-neck top, gray leather gloves and black boots), in order to recreate Kim Possible’s signature outfit.

5 Lilo and Stitch

     Walt Disney

Besides the recent edits (most fans unanimously disagreed with) that Disney+ made to the show’s original version, the 2002 Walt Disney movie, followed by the 2003 and 2004 follow-up series of Lilo and Stitch, is a timeless classic. It illustrates the adventures of rebellious scientist Dr. Jumba Jookiba’s most intricate Experiment 626, currently existing as Lilo’s alien friend Stitch (Chris Sanders). Lilo Pelekai (Daveigh Chase) becomes a young orphan after the untimely death of her parents. She’s later reunited with her eldest sister and legal guardian, Nani Pelekai (Tia Carrere). Stich and Lilo meet while at a pet adoption center where Lilo’s older sister instructs her to pick out a pet of her choosing; a currently locked up and isolated Stich, walks up to Lilo and hugs her, immediately capturing her heart, and ours. Lilo is a great female character beloved by girls (and boys) everywhere.

4 The Powerpuff Girls

Yes, The Powerpuff Girls is now streaming on Hulu, and every adult could probably see a piece of themselves in each of the girls. Watching this ’90s cartoon on Hulu would remind anyone that it’s still an all-time classic. The Powerpuff Girls don’t put up with any nonsense from the criminals of Townsville, and the sisters would put anybody in their place at any point in time. Bubbles (Tara Strong) is very witty and a free spirit, in many instances bringing both the fun and sometimes off the wall components (mostly due to the fact that she wants to help everybody and is extremely sensitive). Blossom (Cathy Cavadini) is in charge of the girls and keeps the team in line, while Buttercup (EG Daily) just straight-up kicks butt. The nostalgia continues, as a live-action reboot is coming to The CW.

3 Madeline

     DIC Entertainment

Rushing up at the crack of dawn every weekday morning before school was both terrible and gut-wrenching, but it was also worth it since Madeline only played at six routinely. Nickelodeon, it’d be great if you could please explain what kids you know who wake up at six in the morning every day. Although it was easy to accept the assumption of Madeline being an orphan, she was just going to boarding school, and there was something about the concept of being so far away from parents, even this early in age, that was enticing.

2 As Told By Ginger

     MTV Networks

As many adults now understand, being a pre-teen and teenager in middle school is extremely difficult and could be mentally draining. Wanting desperately to fit in with the popular group is a real concern for kids, and the series As Told By Ginger successfully conveys the story of these characters throughout the program. Ginger Foutley (Melissa Disney) experiences everyday teenage struggles as she navigates her journey throughout middle school in this wonderful, realistic show. Hopelessly chasing popularity, Ginger has the mindset of wanting to be noticed by her classmates, but doesn’t necessarily like to be looked at. This is very common because kids are known for being critical of their peers’ body types, having anxiety related to this triggering yet relatable concern, and the show takes a very feminist approach to the issue.

1 Carmen Sandiego

     Netflix

Transitioning from a best-selling computer gaming franchise (through most of the ’80s and ’90s) and older TV show, the re-imagined animated action-adventure series Carmen Sandiego, streaming on Netflix, follows a young girl who was once an orphan, Carmen Sandiego (Gina Rodriguez, who will be in the origin movie). Carmen is later trained to become an upscale thief by a group of villains who double as the faculty of V.I.L.E. Academy, an undercover criminal underworld organization. After seeing first-hand just how much harm the academy causes, Carmen goes rogue, finding a way to escape the island, and adopting the name Carmen Sandiego. In this series, she aims to dismantle V.I.L.E. by re-stealing things the organization has already taken from others, returning them to their rightful owners.
