Star Trek: Prodigy writer Aaron Waltke revealed that the most devoted Trekkies have more than just a weekly new episode of the series to look forward to for the next eight weeks. In a Tweet sent on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022, Waltke shared the news that he had written scripts for logs recorded by Vice Admiral Janeway of the USS Dauntless in her pursuit of the USS Protostar. Better yet, these logs are performed by the actor who originated Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, Kate Mulgrew herself!

After returning to earth in the series finale of Voyager, “Endgame: Parts 1 and 2,” Janeway was promoted from the rank of Captain to the rank of Vice Admiral. Janeway’s journey to the Vice Admiral position was first hinted at on the big screen in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. In the final big-screen outing for the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) receives a subspace transmission from Janeway, who had at this point been promoted to Admiral.

Janeway has a brief but consequential role in the movie. While she appears only on Picard’s screen for less than a minute, she sends the Enterprise-E on the fateful mission to Romulus that serves as the catalyst for the film’s main plot.

The Vice Admiral’s log bears a Stardate of 61224.9. This places it just after the events of Prodigy’s midseason premiere, “Asylum,” which was set on Stardate 61209.5. According to the tweets sent by Waltke, the new Vice Admiral’s logs, the first of which was posted to the @StarTrekLogs Instagram account on Tuesday, November 2, will align with the story of Prodigy as it moves forward through the remaining nine episodes of the first season.

Waltke, who has written on every Prodigy episode in development, confirms that the details included in the logs will line up with what’s to come. He describes the logs as an attempt to offer a different perspective on the same events depicted on the show, citing inspiration from the classic film Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon.

Fans of Voyager, in particular, will want to check out the logs, which already promise tantalizing hints about the hitherto-unrevealed fates of certain characters from the seminal seven-season series. In the first log, for example, Janeway reveals that the Dauntless was named by “project lead B’Elanna Torres,” a character played by Roxann Dawson throughout Voyager’s run.

New episodes of Prodigy are released for streaming on Paramount+ on Thursdays.
