The new Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder has opened with immense success to sit atop the box office with its debut weekend. The film opened in the United States and Canada with $143 million in ticket sales. Coupled with its $159 million in overseas profits, the film has already reached $302 million. The opening is also a new career high for director Taika Waititi, as well as for star Natalie Portman. It’s the third highest-grossing opening weekend for a release this year behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($187.4 million) and Jurassic World Dominion ($145 million).

Still sitting high at the box office in the No. 2 spot is the animated sequel Minions: The Rise of Gru. That film debuted to great success at the start of the month by setting a new record for the Fourth of July holiday weekend with a haul of $127.9 million over the extended four-day weekend. It pulled in another $45.5 million this week to bump that domestic haul up to more than $210 million. Worldwide, the film has made more than $399 million, pushing the Despicable Me franchise past $4 billion in revenue earned.

Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick is still flying high. Remarkably, that sequel is in its seventh weekend in theaters, but still managed to fall into the No. 3 spot for this weekend with another $15.5 million earned. The highest earner of Tom Cruise’s career, that film has now pulled in more than $1.14 billion since debuting in theaters nearly two months ago. Its domestic haul is now just above $597 million.

Elvis Continues to Rake It In

Elvis also drew $11 million for this weekend to push its domestic total up to $91 million. Worldwide, it’s now over $155 million. The Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic has also been generating a lot of Oscar buzz since its premiere with many viewers throwing a lot of praise toward Austin Butler for convincingly nailing his portrayal of Elvis Presley. That word of mouth may be contributing to these additional ticket sales.

Rounding out the rest of the top five for this weekend would be Jurassic World Dominion. Its fifth weekend in theaters has pulled in $8.4 million to put the film’s domestic haul over $353 million. It has also surpassed $876 million when factoring in those overseas ticket sales. That film did not perform very well with critics but can still be seen as a very big success based on those box office numbers.
