A new synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder, which has been released courtesy of Marvel Studios alongside the long, long-awaited trailer, sheds further light on the challenges that will befall the MCU’s Asgardian hero. Teased in the newly released footage, the synopsis reveals that Thor: Love and Thunder will find Thor in a more existential place than usual, leaving super heroics behind and searching for “inner peace.”

Unfortunately, it seems that Thor’s attempt to change his life and step away from war and endless battles will be marred by the arrival of Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher. This surprisingly detailed synopsis confirms that Gorr will follow the same path as his come book counterpart, traveling throughout the galaxy and killing the various gods. Something which will sadly stop Thor’s quest for peace and see him wield Stormbreaker once again.

“The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

While we did not see Christian Bale as the powerful MCU villain in the trailer, several pieces of official merchandise for Thor: Love and Thunder have revealed what he will look like. Based on this synopsis, we can assume that the live-action Gorr will follow a similar origin to the comic. Born on a planet with no name and living every day on the brink of starvation, Gorr is taught to trust in the gods, though they never answered his prayers.

After living a tragic life, Gorr abandons his belief in the Gods, leading to his exile. While wandering the desert close to death, Gorr witnesses a pair of battling gods and, realizing that they did indeed exist, they simply didn’t care, Gorr becomes enraged and bonds with the dark god’s sword, transforming into an amorphous mass of living darkness. Gorr’s hatred of the gods leads him on a revenge mission across time and space, and on a collision course with Thor.
