The surprise return of Jane Foster in the upcoming Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder will provide answers to several questions left lingering by her breakup with the Asgardian Avenger. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Thor star Chris Hemsworth offered insight into Jane Foster’s comeback in Love and Thunder, which will find Natalie Portman’s superhero-suit up as The Mighty Thor.
Since her sudden departure, Thor has mentioned Jane Foster here and there throughout his appearances in the MCU. Most notably in Avengers: Endgame, which hinted at the God of Thunder being somewhat broken-hearted over the split — though he was just generally having a bad time, of course. Her return will be even more difficult for Thor than expected, with Foster mysteriously wielding a reforged Mjölnir.
“I mean, I started this journey with her [Portman], playing opposite her in the first film and to reunite now and have Jane being in a very different place and also Thor having to be in a different place. It was a lot of fun and, you know, we got a chance to sort of answer some of the unanswered questions that we left the second film with when they parted. We didn’t really know what actually happened. Did she dump him? Did he dump her? Who left who? Etcetera. So we had a lot of fun answering those questions.”

Unsurprisingly, thanks to her newfound superhero identity, Foster will be more involved in the action than ever before in Thor: Love and Thunder, Hemsworth adds.
Natalie Portman Will Forge Her Own Marvel Hero Identity as The Mighty Thor
Marvel Studios
Natalie Portman was thought to be retired from the world of Marvel due to the constraints inherent in playing Jane Foster. Her return in Thor: Love and Thunder will allow her to forge her own superhero identity as The Mighty Thor, and director Taika Waititi has revealed that it is these changes that drew the actress back to the MCU.
“She comes in and definitely kicks some ass. Which is interesting for Thor to try and understand or grab a hold of that idea because he’s in a space of ‘who am I?’ And to see someone else dressed like him is like, slightly confusing.”
Thor: Love and Thunder will find Jane Foster struggling with personal issues alongside carrying out her superhero duty, which should give Natalie Portman plenty to do when the sequel hits theaters on July 8, 2022.
