Audiences now have their first look at The Suicide Squad star Idris Elba as a Djinn (or genie) alongside Tilda Swinton in Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller’s upcoming fantasy romance film, Three Thousand Years of Longing. The central couple of Three Thousand Years of Longing are glimpsed for the first time in a first-look image, with the movie set to premiere at the 75th Cannes Film Festival this May.

Three Thousand Years of Longing has been written and directed by George Miller, and has been described as an “epic, fantasy romance.” Three Thousand Years of Longing follows a lonely British woman, a scholar who is content with life, who encounters a Djinn while on vacation in Istanbul. The Djinn, or genie if you’d prefer, offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents a problem because she is a scholar of narrative and knows all the cautionary tales about wishes gone wrong. He pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Their conversation, the entirety of which takes place in a hotel room in Istanbul, leads to consequences neither would have expected.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Three Thousand Years of Longing seemingly stars just Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, so expect their conversation throughout the movie to be a powerful one, with the two hugely talented actors once again demonstrating their magnetism as they and they alone dominate the silver screen.
While this image from Three Thousand Years of Longing does not give away much of anything from what is sure to be a profoundly moving movie, it does reveal Idris Elba as the Djinn. The actor, known for roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as well as the likes of Beasts of No Nation, Molly’s Game, and Luther, can be seen sporting the pointy ears and goatee associated with the supernatural being.
Three Thousand Years of Longing is set to premiere Out of Competition at Cannes, which will take place from May 17 to May 28, 2022. “A superb cast and crew brought the best of themselves to the crafting of this movie,” writer/director George Miller said. “It’s a lovely thing that its first showing will be at that magnificent theatre on the Croisette at Cannes.”
