Fans finally know the characters who will make up Marvel’s Thunderbolts, the group of anti-heroes recruited to go on missions for the government. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Task Master (Olga Kurylenko), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) will make up the team, with Pugh’s character expected to act as the leader.
Although the plot is kept mostly under wraps, David Harbour and director Jake Schreier spoke with Entertainment Tonight and teased what’s to come from the anticipated project. Schreier says, “I think you’ll see an incredible group of people who share a certain kind of past trauma, coming together, learning to work together in a way and overcoming some nondescript obstacles we can’t speak to.”

Past trauma is an easy way of putting it, as many of the characters featured in the Thunderbolts have a storied history in the MCU. For example, Bucky Barnes was first introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger, eventually becoming the Winter Soldier. He’s appeared in seven Marvel films and a Disney+ series dedicated to his character alongside Anthony Mackie’s Captain America. John Walker and Red Guardian’s characters haven’t been explored as in-depth; however, they both shared a decent amount of screen time in their respective debuts. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine may be the most interesting character to learn about, as we’ve scarcely seen her in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow. Of course, the entire Thunderbolts cast should be fantastic, and fans will learn more ahead of the eventual 2024 release date.
David Harbour Says the Thunderbolts is in Pre-Production
Marvel Studios
Despite the anticipation toward the Thunderbolts movie, David Harbour is reminding everyone the film is still a ways off. He tells ET, “The audience isn’t ready. No, I mean, you guys are working hard. We’re pre-production; we haven’t started shooting yet. But there’s a lot of really exciting work happening on this movie.” He continues, “I also think it’s like a unique MCU movie in the sense that you got a bunch of misfits and outcasts and losers and people that don’t really live up to the super in superhero.”
Director Jake Schreier has a few feature films to his name, including Robot & Frank and Paper Towns. However, he has far more experience in television, with The Premise, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Dave, and Minx. Fans can see how Schreier fairs in his biggest directorial project to date alongside Harbour’s second MCU outing when Thunderbolts arrives in theaters on July 26, 2024.
