The Parasite television reboot is losing Tilda Swinton, according to reports from Variety. News of the remake began to gain traction in 2020 when Adam McKay was announced as a possible executive producer for the upcoming HBO series. Unfortunately, fans of Swinton will be devastated by the news, as she was set to lead opposite Mark Ruffalo.

Swinton reportedly signed onto the project in February 2020 but is backtracking on her commitment. “I don’t think I’ll be a part of it, but I’m very happy to be a cheerleader,” the Academy Award winner said before a screening of her film The Eternal Daughter. This would’ve been the third collaboration between Swinton and Bong Joon Ho, the writer and director of Parasite. The pair have previously worked on the Netflix film Okja, which starred Paul Dano, Seo-hyun Ahn, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Giancarlo Esposito alongside Swinton. Their first collaboration came years earlier in 2013 when Joon Ho and Swinton worked on Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans, Ed Harris, and Song Kang-ho, who would later go on to lead Parasite.

The untitled Parasite show will be a six-hour limited series for HBO based upon ideas that Bong Joon Ho was forced to scrap in the initial film. The series is still in the writing stages, meaning audiences likely won’t get a glimpse at the premiere until 2024 at the earliest. However, fans can look forward to Mark Ruffalo leading the cast, though Swinton will be noticeably absent.

Tilda Swinton plays two characters in The Eternal Daughter, as she portrays an elderly woman named Rosalind Hart and her daughter Julie Hart. The project comes from Joanna Hogg, who writes and directs the film with her previous work, including The Souvenir and Unrelated.

Swindon discussed her role with Variety, speaking on the spooky experience involved with filming the movie. “What’s interesting for me is that I never looked like my mom,” the actress explains. “I look very like my father, but Rosalind looks very much like my mother. So when I see Rosalind, I don’t really see me. It’s not unfreaky. Rosalind also speaks a language that Joanna’s mother and my mother spoke. It’s a sort of frequency. It’s a very, very, very strange kind of spooky experience for us.”

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 6 before arriving in London and New York earlier this month. The Eternal Daughter will receive a limited theater release for audiences on Dec. 2, later this year.
