HBO Max’s original series Titans has had a far reach in the world of DC Comics. With the cast of heroes reaching out to multiple cities, including fictional landmarks such as Gotham City & most recently, Metropolis, it’s easy to see how the series has been able to pull multiple different heroes and villains into this action-packed series.
One of the newest and more surprising additions to the team comes in the form of a career criminal, Jinx. Jinx is often associated with the Teen Titans, but more so as an enemy or antagonist for the team. While she’s been seen as an anti-hero in other media, this is the character’s first foray into a live-action space, so the depiction can appear jarring for some. Here we will be going over different aspects that make up the character, including what is known of her origins, her abilities, and how she’s been depicted in other media, including a look at the actor that is bringing the character to life.

Origins
DC Comics
Looking at the source material, Jinx (real name, unknown) is an Indian woman with elemental abilities, known for working alongside the terrorist group, The Fearsome Five. While not much is known of how Jinx initially ended up in prison, she had met the group she would become synonymous with when the Fearsome Five attacked the prison that held her. Finding order in the team’s chaos, Jinx would escape prison and aid the team in their rampage. Many members of the team would come and go, either by a shifting of loyalties, changes to continuity, or death, Jinx would remain a core member of the team’s lineup for decades, often using her powers to aid the team in their battles against the Teen Titans, though Jinx has been known to briefly align with all-female groups to take on superheroes such as Wonder Woman, Zatanna, & Hawkgirl.
Powers
Warner Bros. Television Distribution
Jinx’s abilities are often associated with the elements, similar to tales of Wiccan witches. Jinx has been shown to be capable of causing small earthquakes to catch her foes off guard and being able to manipulate the air to help fend off flying opponents such as Starfire and Beast Boy.
Jinx can also tap into pure magical energy, often shown when she lashes out with bolts of energy to blast enemies away. While Jinx’s attire is often questioned for its efficiency in battle, she has stated that her powers require her to have contact with the Earth, and so she is often seen barefoot, maintaining contact so that she can unleash a powerful barrage of energy at one time. This key note has often led to her opponents focusing their efforts on knocking her out early or simply separating her from the ground. These features would be used in the live-action adaptation of the character.
Personality
Depending on where you’ve first seen the character depicted, there are often wild variations in Jinx’s personality. In the comics, Jinx is often seen as a greedy individual, wanting to cause untold destruction and revel in the chaos, and reap the rewards that come forth.
Jinx is also known to be loyal, only aligning with Doctor Sivana after the mad scientist brings Jinx’s friend and teammate, Shimmer, back to life. While Jinx is shown to be angered at her friend Gizmo being murdered in front of her and her ally Mammoth being arrested, she is also intelligent enough to know when it is better to fight another day, leaving to plan her next move, and to avenge her allies.
Alternate Media
Jinx first came to mainstream attention when she was featured in the animated series Teen Titans. Featuring a wildly different look and set of powers, Jinx was de-aged in this depiction to be more of a foil to the Teen Titans and, true to her name, would use powers of probability manipulation (similar to Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Magic) instead of natural elements. Jinx would stay aligned with a team known as the H.I.V.E Five, a group similar to the Fearsome Five, and she would be given a look more inclined towards the appearance of a witch, and instead of the comic’s bald look, this version of Jinx would have bright pink hair to help her stand out in the animation style of the show. Jinx would also prove to be more of an anti-hero as she would show that she is capable of feeling sympathetic to Cyborg and had even been convinced to fight for the Teen Titans by Kid Flash. She would also carry a romantic relationship with Cyborg in Teen Titans Go!
The live-action adaptation would pull from both the comics and the animated series, as Jinx would remain de-aged (though not to the same extent) and keep her pink hair, though her criminal acts were not as extreme as wanton terrorism. She would keep her powers of nature manipulation and magic, though her allegiance seems to waver between self-serving and working alongside Dick Grayson, whom she appears to have carried feelings for at one time.
The Actress
Netflix
For Titans, Jinx is portrayed by Lisa Ambalavanar, an English actor who has been acting professionally for television, film, and stage for over ten years. Lisa Ambalavanar would receive her first significant television role in the soap opera Doctors when she took over the part of Alia Hanif. Carrying the momentum from that success, Ambalavanar would then take on the main role of Mia in Netflix’s The A List, where she would lead a mystery series.
To look at her stage productions, Lisa Ambalavanar received sterling reviews and praise for her part as Kathy Selden in Singin in the Rain as performed at Nottingham Arts Theatre. Seeing this actress take on the role of Jinx and putting unique twists on the persona, Lisa Ambalavanar carries the potential to become a fan favorite and return to the series in a more expanded role in the future, should her character arc leave an open ending.
