Tom Cruise took to the skies to thank everyone for making Top Gun: Maverick the year’s biggest film. In a video posted online by Cruise and Paramount Pictures, the fearless actor can be seen addressing the camera from the inside of a plane. While he’s on set in South Africa for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Cruise talks about Maverick and how the sequel had a tremendous run in theaters, something that he couldn’t be happier about as he’s back high above the ground on his next project.

“I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theaters,” Cruise says in the footage. “Thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick!”

At this point, director Christopher McQuarrie taps Cruise on the shoulder to remind him that they’re trying to get the shot they need for the Mission: Impossible movie. After McQuarrie refuses an offer to join him on the way down, Cruise then casually falls backward out of the aircraft and begins free-falling toward the ground below. Hurtling toward the earth, Cruise continues on with thanking the fans for supporting him and the release of Top Gun: Maverick in theaters.

“Where was I? Oh yeah, thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick,” Cruise says. “As always, thank you for allowing us to entertain you. It truly is the honor of a lifetime.”

Before blowing away in the wind, Cruise goes on to wish everyone a “very safe and happy holiday,” adding, “we’ll see you at the movies!”

The special announcement also touts the release of Top Gun: Maverick on the streaming platform Paramount+. Many other Paramount releases had gone to the streamer around 45 days after their theatrical releases, but that wasn’t the case with the Top Gun sequel, given that fans would not stop going to the theater to see the film. The success has made Maverick not only the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career but also the highest-grossing film of 2022. Along with earning more than $1.4 billion at the box office, the film was met with very strong reviews, with some critics even enjoying it more than the acclaimed original.

Joseph Kosinski directed Top Gun: Maverick using a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. In addition to bringing back Val Kilmer for a special reunion with Cruise, the film also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. The film picks up with Maverick training a group of younger Top Gun graduates while confronting his past.

Top Gun: Maverick will start streaming on Paramount+ on Dec. 22, 2022.
