Tom Holland seems to have been feeling the strain of the constant secrecy and evasion that comes with the territory of any Marvel movie promotional tour, as the young actor revealed that he is tired of lying to reporters and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe about what may or may not be happening in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which began receiving its first online reviews today ahead of its U.K. release on Wednesday. With so many plates spinning in the third solo outing for the webbed-wonder, you would think that Holland and Co would be old hands at this kind of thing by now, but it apparently still takes a toll even after so many movies.
Tom Holland returns as Spider-Man in the new Marvel offering, which has many fans more hyped than for any other movie released in the last two years, and with the box office estimates suggesting an opening weekend haul of around $500 million worldwide, Spider-Man: No Way Home is guaranteed to be not old the biggest Marvel movie of the pandemic, but the biggest movie overall, and is certain to take out Daniel Craig’s James Bond finale No Time To Die as the top Hollywood movie of the year. However, while Spider-Man has always been one of Marvel’s biggest assets, the intrigue around the film’s plot has certainly helped keep everyone on their toes as we head into the home straight.
“We’re pretty tired of constantly lying and deceiving people,” Holland told Yahoo Entertainment UK. “I feel like my conscience is really weighing on me now. It’s tough.”
Holland went on to ask his co-star Zendaya, “Remember when that was the initial marketing plan? The initial plan was to make the film seem like a civil war between myself and Doctor Strange and they were gonna keep everything a secret. That is impossible."
This was a reference to the fact that Marvel and Sony had a debate over whether to use the returning villains at all in the marketing of the movie, and at one point there was a firm idea of launching Spider-Man: No Way Home as Civil War 2 and keeping all of the surprises for the movie itself. As it stands, we know that former adversaries Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, The Lizard and Sandman will all be crossing the multiverse to take on Peter Parker, but the real question is who else will be along for the ride?
So far there is almost no doubt that former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be suiting up again and joining the action, but recently rumors have also suggested that Tom Hardy’s Venom could make an appearance after his world and that of the MCU collided in the post-credit scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. While there have been many hints at a meeting between Venom and Spider-Man coming in the future, it seems like this would not be the place to have their first face-off with so much else already happening, so perhaps we shouldn’t get too excited about seeing Eddie Brock turning up just yet.
All will be revealed when Spider-Man: No Way Home makes its debut over the next few days.
