Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland has described the upcoming Marvel adventure as “three generations coming together,” but insists that previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are not involved. In a recent interview, the rumor of Maguire and Garfield’s cameos was brought up, with Holland deciding to either make a joke regarding their appearances…or quickly covering up after a slip-of-the-tongue.

“Everyone puts their trousers on in the same way in the morning,” Holland said. “It was interesting having those guys come in because they have a certain ownership over Spider-Man in their own way, and…” After a brief pause, the actor continued saying, “I’m talking about Alfred and Jamie and those guys. To see Alfred come in, and have to adapt and change to the way that the films are made, but also change director, and also [the fact that] I’m now Spider-Man. It was really interesting to see these actors adapt and change what they were doing to fit the modern era.”

While his comments came with a clear wink and a tease, with the actor further denying that his Peter Parker will meet prior iterations on screen, Holland did (perhaps inadvertently) provide further confirmation that Jamie Foxx will indeed reprise the role of Electro, the villain from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Holland continued, asserting again that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are not involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home. “People don’t believe me when I say that [Maguire and Garfield] are not coming back. But people are going to have to believe me at some point.” He laughs. “It means a lot to me. The first time you see Doc and the rest of the characters that come back, it’s so exciting - and it’s such a huge moment in cinematic history. It’s three generations coming together.” Despite his assertions, it is exceedingly difficult to believe Holland about Maguire and Garfield’s return when he describes the Marvel sequel as “three generations coming together.” What else could this mean? Surely he is not just talking about the villains?

It is especially hard to take Holland at his word following an apparent leak, which seemingly debuts an image of Tom Holland uniting with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, with each of them wearing their respective Spider-Man threads. With the confirmation that the likes of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, will all be entering the MCU and causing all manner of havoc, Holland will certainly need the assistance of the other Spider-Guys, whether they feature or not.

Spider-Man: No Way Home finds Peter Parker asking Doctor Strange to help make his identity as Spider-Man a secret following its public revelation, which leads to the madness of the multiverse being unleashed. The events of the movie have recently been described by Holland as “not fun,” with the actor adding, “It’s dark and it’s sad, and it’s going to be really affecting.” Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 17, 2021, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
