While we are used to seeing Tom Holland swinging from buildings and in the middle of all kinds of big budget explosions and special effects, the actor would love to do a more low-key movie as Peter Parker, without having Spider-Man involved. As Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in cinemas, Holland has discussed the potential future of the webbed-wonder and came out with his surprising desire to do something out of the ordinary with the character, like an independent film following Parker when he is not in the guise of Spider-Man.

“I’d love to make a film about Peter Parker that has nothing to do with Spider-Man,” the actor said in an interview with Fandom. “Like, make a four million-pound indie movie about Peter Parker. I don’t know. They’d never do that. But it would be fun.”

For many months it was speculated whether this would be the final outing for Holland in the dual role of Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and with the movie coming with a subtitle like No Way Home, the story involving the multiverse and Spider-Man being rumored to be heading into Sony’s universe, there was plenty to support the idea. Holland himself has also stated in numerous interviews that he probably doesn’t still want to be playing the role when he gets to a certain age, however as things have evolved, it appears that all the speculation of his imminent departure has been greatly exaggerated.

“You know, there is a future for Spider-Man — whether I’m a part of it, I don’t know,” he explained. “It’s been an incredible journey so far and if it’s time for me to hang up the cape and let the next person take over, I will do that proudly knowing that I’ve achieved everything that I wanted to in this world. And when I say this world I mean the MCU, I don’t mean ’this world’ like in the actual world.”

While there is something intriguing about seeing what a Peter Parker story without Spider-Man would entail, Holland is right that it is unlikely that we will ever get to see that in the same context as the MCU, although now the seed has been planted there is surely someone at Marvel or Sony frantically trying to work out how they can build it into something that can be used in future. For now though, it is clear to see that it is Spider-Man that pulls in audiences and that is exactly why Spider-Man: No Way Home is on course to be the biggest movie of the year, and clearly not for the last time judging by the recent comments from producer Amy Pascal. She said recently:

Sources at Sony have claimed that there are currently no definite plans for more Spider-Man movies, but in the last few days rumors have started circulating that Holland has signed on for his next Spider-Man outing and the film is in development, as well as the actor saying he even made his own movie pitch to the studio. As usual, it will all become clear in time.

“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go on to the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”
