On Sunday, October 9, at New York Comic Con, the cast and creators of CW’s The Winchesters debuted the first episode of the series in a special screening. During the panel, it was also announced that Smallville alum Tom Welling is joining the Supernatural spinoff. The first episode of The Winchesters airs on The CW on October 15.
Set in the 1970s, the series is told from the perspective of Supernatural’s Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles, who created The Winchesters with Daneel Ackles), who narrates the story of how his parents, John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly), fell in love and fought monsters together. When John returns home from fighting in Vietnam, he goes on a mission to trace his father’s past. In his journey, he crosses paths with 19-year-old demon hunter Mary, who is also searching for answers after the disappearance of her father. Helping John and Mary uncover the hidden truths about both their families are Latika (Nida Khurshid), a young hunter-in-training, and Carlos (Jonathan “Jojo” Fleites), an easygoing hunter.

Their investigation leads them to a rare book emporium, whose owner, Ada (Demetria McKinney), takes an interest in the occult and could provide the missing pieces to their puzzle. But secrets run deep for both the Winchesters and Campbells. Despite the best efforts of John’s mother Millie (Bianca Kajlich) to protect her son from pursuing a dangerous life of demon hunting, John and Mary are both determined to work together to uphold their families’ legacies while beginning to form a family of their own.
Tom Welling to play Samuel Campbell
The CW
Tom Welling will be playing Samuel Campbell. The actor is best known for the role of Clark Kent on Smallville, a series on which The Winchesters’ executive producer Jensen Ackles also starred in 22 episodes. The actor starred in the FOX series Lucifer as Lt. Marcus Pierce/Cain from 2017 to 2018. The role of Samuel Campbell was first played by Mitch Pileggi in Supernatural.
Welling will make his debut as Samuel Campbell in Episode 7. “Samuel taught Mary everything he knows. Gruff and pragmatic, he’s a veteran Hunter who prefers actions over words — and it’s always his way or the highway,” reads the character description. “But when Samuel teams up with Mary and her friends to save the world, he won’t only have to defeat the most dangerous monster he’s ever faced — he’ll also have to mend his broken relationship with his daughter.”
