When Top Gun was released in the 1980s, the incredible flight sequences and soundtrack took people’s breath away. The long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, has continued to impress. It has been hailed as one of the best films of 2022 and one of the best legacy sequels ever made. Director Joseph Kosinski had even previously proved with Tron: Legacy that he was able to continue off a beloved classic and appeal to a modern audience.

Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick has been nearly four decades in the making. The film has finally been released after two years of continuous delays. Maverick and Iceman, played by Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, have returned. Moreover, they have been joined by a new generation of fighter pilots. Here’s where you may have already seen the cast of Top Gun: Maverick.

Tom Cruise

     Paramount Pictures

The titular star of Top Gun: Maverick, of course, is none other than Tom Cruise. He has established himself as one of the greatest action movie stars working in Hollywood today. Cruise starred in films such as Edge of Tomorrow, The Mummy, and Jack Reacher, but is perhaps best-known for his role as Ethan Hunt in all the Mission: Impossible films. Before Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise worked with Kosinski on the 2013 post-apocalyptic adventure, Oblivion.

Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer Connelly, who played Maverick’s love interest in Top Gun: Maverick, has been a movie star since the 80s. She worked with David Bowie on the film Labyrinth, in which she played Sarah. Connelly’s other film roles included Josie in Career Opportunities, Jenny in The Rocketeer, Dr. Chiren in Alita: Battle Angel, and Alicia Nash in A Beautiful Mind. More recently, Connelly has been playing a leading role in the Snowpiercer television series as Melanie Cavill.

Jon Hamm

Cyclone, the commander of Naval Air Forces in Top Gun: Maverick, was played by Jon Hamm. The role of Don Draper in Mad Men brought Hamm to prominence, but he has appeared in many television series and films over the years. Hamm played Buddy in Baby Driver, the salesman Laramie Seymour Sullivan in Bad Times at the El Royale, and Bob Callahan in Tag. Hamm has also not shied away from voice roles, providing the voice for Brogan the Ogre in Shrek Forever After and Herb Overkill in Minions.

Miles Teller

Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw is the son of Maverick’s deceased best friend and former radar intercept officer, Goose. Rooster was played by Miles Teller, who received major public attention as the lead of the critically-acclaimed Whiplash. Teller has worked with Joker director Todd Phillips on the black comedy, War Dogs, in which he portrayed a fictionalized David Packouz. The talented actor also played the role of Peter Hayes in the Divergent series, and worked with his Divergent co-star Shailene Woodley on The Spectacular Now.

Glen Powell

Hangman represented a blend of Iceman and Maverick’s strong personalities. Glenn Powell went into Top Gun: Maverick with prior experience playing a cocky character, having previously portrayed Chad Rowell on Scream Queens. Powell’s filmography has included small roles in The Dark Knight Rises and The Expendables 3. He later went on to take larger roles that included Charlie Young in the romantic comedy Set It Up and the astronaut John Glenn in the critically-acclaimed biographical drama Hidden Figures.

Monica Barbaro

Natasha “Phoenix” Trace has become one of actress Monica Barbaro’s first film roles, but Barbaro has been on television since 2015, the year she played Brenda “Bentley” Miller in the crime drama, Stitchers. Barbaro had main roles on television as Yael in Unreal, Anna Valdez in Chicago Justice, and Cora Vasquez in The Good Cop. As for what’s next, Deadline has reported that Barbaro will be voicing a character named Meagan in an upcoming animated spin-off series to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead.

Jay Ellis

Jay Ellis was Top Gun: Maverick’s Lieutenant Reuben “Payback” Fitch. He has been recognized for his role as Martin Lawrence Walker on the hit HBO comedy-drama series Insecure. Before joining the cast of Insecure, Ellis took on his first major role as wide receiver Bryce Westbrook in seasons six to nine of BET’s The Game. The charismatic actor has even tackled the film genre of horror as Jason Walker in Escape Room.

Danny Ramirez

Actor Danny Ramirez, who played Lieutenant “Fanboy” Garcia in Top Gun: Maverick, has been living the ultimate fanboy dream. He has risen to become the MCU’s new Falcon, Joaquin Torres, in Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. That role followed his previous work in the live-action X-Men series The Gifted, where he played a mutant named Wes. Ramirez is no stranger to the world of streaming and has played Ash in the Hulu thriller No Exit. He also had a recurring role as Mario Martinez on Netflix’s On My Block.

Lewis Pullman

Lewis Pullman took the unusually straight-forward fighter pilot call sign of “Bob” in Top Gun: Maverick. Before Bob ever got in the air, Lewis Pullman portrayed Luke in The Strangers: Prey at Night and Major Major Major Major in the satirical dark comedy miniseries, Catch-22. Pullman was also Miles Miller in 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale. He reunited with his Bad Times at the El Royale co-star, Jon Hamm, on Top Gun: Maverick.

Greg “Tarzan” Davis

Top Gun: Maverick’s “Coyote”, Greg Davis joined Grey’s Anatomy in its 18th season as Dr. Jordan Wright. Davis also appeared in Tales From the Hood 2 as Kahad and The Call of the Wild as an orchard worker. It has been announced that the actor has joined Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. Davis has not yet established a large filmography, but with two roles in major blockbusters with Cruise, his career is likely to pick up speed.
