Even in its 13th weekend, Top Gun: Maverick continues to break records. The Tom Cruise blockbuster has passed Avengers: Infinity War at the domestic box office to become the sixth-highest grossing movie ever in North America.
As of Friday, August 19, Top Gun: Maverick has collected $679 million, narrowly overtaking Infinity War’s 2018 haul of $678 million, Variety reports. However, the Avengers sequel still reigns supreme at the global box office with $2.05 billion against Maverick’s $1.38 billion.
Top Gun: Maverick’s box-office performance is unprecedented, especially for a modern blockbuster that came out at arguably the worst time ever for theaters. Top Gun: Maverick has remained in the top 5 for 12 out of its 13 weekends and is still refusing to leave the charts. The film is playing out like a movie from the ‘80s. Paramount Pictures’ brilliant marketing campaign, the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth, and repeat viewings all contributed to Top Gun: Maverick’s success. And it’s not like it didn’t have any tough competition.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Top Gun: Maverick only had two weeks to itself before the likes of Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Lightyear, and Thor: Love and Thunder began rolling out weekly. Yet, it has outgrossed them all, and if all goes well, Top Gun: Maverick could end up as the fifth biggest movie stateside.
The only other movies ahead of Top Gun: Maverick are Black Panther ($700 million), Avatar ($760 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804 million), Avengers: Endgame ($858 million), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million). It will be difficult, but Top Gun: Maverick does stand a chance to pass Black Panther. It has already done so internationally, where its next target is Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.403 billion).
Top Gun: Maverick Will Arrive on Digital Home Video This Week
Paramount Pictures
Top Gun: Maverick’s stellar box-office run will be affected by its digital release, although the lack of theatrical competition could cancel it out too. Paramount Pictures has revealed the home video release dates for Top Gun: Maverick. The film will debut on digital on August 23 and 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 1, with almost two hours of bonus content, which includes exclusive BTS interviews, the cast’s fighter plane training, the making of the spectacular aerial sequences, and more.
Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. The film also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Jon Hamm, Val Kilmer, and Ed Harris. You can check out the trailer and plot synopsis below.
“After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: ‘Rooster,’ the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka ‘Goose.’ Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”
