It’s a pretty big weekend for Tom Cruise. On Sunday, the actor reached his milestone 60th birthday and has had his name trending with fans across the world sending their well wishes and discussing their favorite Cruise films. The box office has also delivered a wonderful present for Cruise with the news that his newest movie, Top Gun: Maverick, has officially soared past the $1.1 billion mark in worldwide ticket sales as it continues to establish itself as one of the highest-grossing movies in history.

Domestically, Top Gun 2 is estimated to earn about $34 million for the 4th of July holiday weekend, via The Numbers. That will push its total haul from ticket sales garnered in the United States and Canada up to about $572 million. Overseas, Maverick has earned another $37 million to bump up its international earnings to $544.5 million. That puts the movie well past the $1.1 billion mark, and as fans continues to shell out money to catch the sequel on the big screen, that number will only keep rising.

The film had previously surpassed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to become the highest-grossing film of 2022, and it will be a challenge for any other movie released this year to catch up. The movie is also the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career, and that’s an impressive feat for the A-list Hollywood star who frequently appears in box office blockbusters. Better yet for Cruise and the Maverick team is that the film was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews as critics and fans have given nearly universal praise to the sequel.

Joseph Kosinski directed Top Gun: Maverick using a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. The film serves as a sequel to the 1986 movie Top Gun with Cruise returning in the lead role, though an emotional reunion scene with Val Kilmer makes for one of the movie’s best moments. The cast also includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. You can watch the official trailer and check out the synopsis below.
