The upcoming remake of celebrated South Korean zombie flick Train to Busan has now been confirmed to be titled The Last Train to New York. Along with the new title, Deadline have also revealed that the movie has also now been given a release date of April 21, 2023, meaning that there is still a little while to wait before seeing how Warner Bros. Pictures plans to transport the claustrophobic horror over to the western world.
The word remake often sends a chill down the spines of cinema fans, but director Timo Tjahjanto has already responded to early criticisms of his vision for The Last Train to New York. The filmmaker has assured fans of the original Train to Busan that it will be worth it, sharing some wise words from The Conjuring and Insidious director James Wan, who will produce the project. “When your @ is suddenly filling up & its more about Train to Busan remake,” Tjahjanto began. “In James (Wan) own words: Timo, we need to rise above & beyond everyone’s expectations, just like other great remakes have done such as The Ring or Dawn of the Dead remake. Who am I to let my boss down?”

Released back in 2016, Train to Busan is a South Korean action horror movie directed by Yeon Sang-ho and starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an, Choi Woo-shik, Ahn So-hee and Kim Eui-sung. The story mostly takes place on a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan as a zombie apocalypse suddenly breaks out in the country and threatens the safety of the passengers. The movie was a big hit with critics and audiences alike, thanks to its refreshing spin on the zombie genre, genuinely frightening, claustrophobic sequences, and white-knuckle pace, all of which is sprinkled with a healthy dose of cutting social commentary.
It Chapter Two and The Nun writer Gary Dauberman is on board to pen the script for the Train to Busan remake, The Last Train to New York, and he too has felt the need to respond to the woes and worries of horror movie fans. The writer has offered some insight into how he plans to approach the material, with Dauberman intending to mix things up for an American audience. Though he did go on to reassure that these changes will not encroach on the superb original movie. “Yes. I won’t get more into that but that’s one of those movies that’s so f-ing great, it’s so well done, you don’t want to do anything that’s going to be less than,” Dauberman said. “I think we’re certainly getting there. It feels like there’s a reason to make the American version without ruining the experience of the original.”
New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster and Coin Operated will be co-producing partners on The Last Train to New York, with Warner Bros. Pictures distributing worldwide. The original Train to Busan spawned a sequel, Peninsula, an animated prequel, and there are now tentative plans for a third outing, so expect The Last Train to New York to set up a similar franchise. So, once again for those in the back, The Last Train to New York will shuffle onto screens on April 21, 2023.
