The long-gestating Tron sequel, Tron: Ares, is back in development, with Oscar winner and Morbius star Jared Leto set to star under the direction of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Marco Polo filmmaker Joachim Rønning. The news comes courtesy of Deadline, with the Tron threequel now gearing up to come online and begin filming in August 2023 in Vancouver.
According to the report, Disney is now in negotiations with Joachim Rønning, a director who has worked for the House of Mouse on several projects in the past, including Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and the upcoming Young Woman and the Sea starring Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Another installment in the Tron franchise led by Leto has been in development since as far back as 2017. The actor, who back in 2020 revealed the title to be Tron: Ares, has since stated how excited he is to carry on the legacy. “I’m struck with such gratitude for the opportunity to bring this movie to life, especially as both the original video game and the film affected me so deeply as a young child,” Leto said. “The fact that I get to be a part of this new chapter is mind-blowing. I am so very excited and proud to confirm that YES - I will be starring in TRON. We will work as hard as we possibly can to create something that I hope you all will love. We have some very special ideas in store for you all… See you in the grid!”
What exactly the title Tron: Ares means remains to be seen. Ares is, of course, the Greek god of war and courage and will reportedly be the name of Leto’s character. Could the digital world of The Grid begin to bleed into our own, leading to war? We will have to wait and see.

Released in 1982, the first Tron was written and directed by Steven Lisberger from a story by Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird and followed Kevin Bridges as a computer programmer, Kevin Flynn, who is dragged into a virtual world where he is pitted against a malevolent software he himself created. He takes the help of Tron, a security program that helps him defeat the villain and escape. Tron remains a beloved science fiction classic to this day, with the movie largely remembered for the stylistic rotoscope effect used to create the vibrant digital world.
Tron was followed up almost thirty years later with director Joseph Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy, which picks up following the disappearance of Jeff Bridges’ character. Skipping forward to 20 years later, the main narrative follows Kevin’s son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), who discovers a message believed to have been sent by his father. Sam soon finds himself transported into The Grid. While the legacy sequel was met with mixed reviews, much like its predecessor, it has since garnered a cult following (in large part thanks to its soundtrack), with fans wondering if we would ever again return to The Grid.
The latest version of the Tron 3 script was written by Jesse Wigutow, with Leto set to produce Tron: Ares alongside Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.
