Former U.S. president Donald Trump is referring to himself as the “superhero” America needs, but such a proclamation isn’t going by unnoticed by The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke. Consisting of three seasons so far with a fourth in the works, The Boys satirizes superhero fiction with a hearty dose of social commentary, all the while spilling copious amounts of blood in often outlandish ways. Antony Starr’s character Homelander, a murderous and corrupt superhero who poses as a kind American hero, has often drawn comparisons to Trump, with Kripke previously admitting that the controversial 45th president has inspired moments from the show.

Now, Trump is making waves with his announcement that “AMERICA NEEDS A SUPERHERO,” which was posted to his social media platform Truth Social. The former president said that a “major announcement” is coming on Thursday, and this was hyped with a video clip featuring artwork of Trump transforming into a Superman-like superhero. The video animates lasers shooting out of Trump’s eyes, a superpower that Superman possesses. Of course, Homelander has that ability as well, and for Kripke, this is all just making it way too easy to compare Trump to the wicked “Supe.”

“C’mon. He’s making it too easy,” Kripke tweeted, posting a screenshot of the Trump video side by side with a Homelander photo.

Homelander Takes Some Inspiration from Reality

Kripke has named one moment in particular written into The Boys that was directly inspired by Donald Trump. In season 3, there’s a scene with the Homelander character “shooting” someone on the street while his fans cheer him on. Kripke previously told Deadline that the scene was based on the famous quote with Trump saying he wouldn’t lose voters even if he were to “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody.”

“Could we take Homelander so far as to literally kill somebody on Fifth Avenue and then be applauded for it? It’s funny,” Kripke said. “It’s like at the time we wrote it, we felt it was like a little satirically pushed, but it is true that the more awful politicians are behaving, you know, the more popular they’re becoming with their fan base.”

That’s not to say that only the right gets lampooned by The Boys. The show also features a character heavily reminiscent of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, and as a politician who’s secretly a supervillain, she hasn’t been depicted in the most flattering light, either. Perhaps there’s no one safe when it comes to The Boys, which certainly isn’t known for pulling punches in any way.

The first three seasons of The Boys are streaming on Prime Video.
