If you’ve got your fingers crossed for Kill Bill Vol. 3 to finally happen, this story might disappoint you. In 2003 and 2004, Uma Thurman starred in Quentin Tarantino’s two-part Kill Bill movies, portraying a bride seeking revenge against a man named Bill (David Carradine) who left her for dead. In the years since, Thurman and Tarantino have both teased their desire to do a third installment. For whatever reason, however, the gears on Kill Bill Vol. 3 just never got to turning, leaving the unmade sequel to rot in development hell.

Speaking about the ill-fated project on The Jess Cagle Show for SiriusXM, Thurman provided another update on Kill Bill Vol. 3. The actress confirmed that she’d had serious discussions about the film with Tarantino, and at one point, there was “real thought” that this was going to happen. Unfortunately, we’re now several years beyond that moment, and now, Thurman sees Kill Bill Vol. 3 as much less probable. She doesn’t outright say that the third film is outright canceled, but Thurman concedes that it’s not going to happen anytime soon (if at all).

Discussions of a third Kill Bill movie go all the way back to 2004 when the first two films were still new. Tarantino told Entertainment Weekly at the time that his hope was for this to be his personal “Dollars Trilogy,” but that he was thinking that he needed at least fifteen years to help set up the story for the third installment. The idea is that young Nikki, now all grown up, seeks revenge against The Bride for killing her mother.

Kill Bill Vol. 3 Might Never Happen, But It Sounds Amazing

In more recent years, Quentin Tarantino has still kept the hope alive for Kill Bill Vol. 3. The filmmaker’s next feature is planned to be his retirement film, so Tarantino has a lot of thinking to do when it comes to his next project. In 2019, Tarantino told Andy Cohen that Kill Bill Vol. 3 was still “on the cards.” In July 2021, the director added on The Joe Rogan Experience that he was still considering doing the film. He was also hoping to get Maya Hawke, Uma Thurman’s real-life daughter, involved in the cast.

“I think it’s just revisiting the characters 20 years later and just imagining The Bride and her daughter, Bebe, having 20 years of peace, and then that peace is shattered,” Tarantino said. “And now The Bride and Bebe are on the run, and just the idea of being able to cast Uma and cast her daughter Maya in the thing would be f**king exciting.”

Vivica A. Fox also said in 2020 that she hopes original actress Ambrosia Kelley would return to play the grown version of her daughter. If that doesn’t happen, there’s a popular fan campaign for Zendaya to get the role, which Fox says she also would support. In any case, the plug has not been pulled just yet on Kill Bill Vol. 3, but it remains to be seen if the film will or won’t end up actually getting made.
