The Umbrella Academy is about a group of superheroes born under mysterious circumstances and adopted by a strange man who trained them to fight. They later find out they were preparing to save the world, though many questions arise from that discovery. Each character was born with a unique ability, some more commonly found in superhero tropes and some a little different from the popular superhero genre in general. Throughout the original Netflix series, each uses their powers often, with various success rates on whether they stop their opponent.

In this list, their power will be ranked while taking into consideration their fighting and defense skills, as it is not just their powers that make them dangerous and strong members of the titular Umbrella Academy.

7 Diego

     Netflix

While Diego’s power is cool, it’s not the most useful. Diego, otherwise known as number two, has the ability to throw and manipulate knives in the air. He can hit a target from anywhere without looking. This is an interesting power, but if the person attacking you has any heavy armor on or is even just good at dodging, they can defeat Diego. Diego also has little defense except for his fighting skills, which in the first season were on par with others, but seemed to have gotten less valuable as the show continued. This puts Diego at the bottom of the siblings, even though he is number two when ranked by his own father.

6 Luther

Luther is strong. But… that’s it. As long as you are not a short-distance combat fighter, you have a good chance of beating him. He has little defense and is the most susceptible out of his siblings. While his father made him number one, perhaps because he sensed the loyalty Luther had, in terms of ability, he is not the strongest member by a long shot. Even when shown that he is stronger than most, other stronger opponents still take him down with their strength, proving his power to be redundant and less valuable.

5 Klaus

Klaus can see, talk, and raise the dead to fight for him. This power is extremely useful. He has many possibilities, but Klaus doesn’t have control when we meet him. He is afraid of his own power. Later in the series, he is getting the hang of it but is still learning more about his ability. In the most recent episodes, he realizes he can’t die. But in terms of raw power, he is still learning a lot about his ability. Klaus could one day move up this list and possibly become the most powerful member of the Umbrella Academy, but for now, with his current grasp on his skills, he is sitting in the middle.

4 Ben

Ben can release a monster from another dimension out of his chest. It is seen as very physical power, very dangerous, and definitely deadly. This first time we see him use it, in a flashback, his entire body is covered in blood because he hurt the bad guys so aggressively. Ben, though, can’t control the monster too much. Mainly he can aim it toward the villains, but he hates using the power in general. So he falls in the middle of the list for those two reasons.

3 Five

Teleportation seems less powerful when simply reading off the powers in this lineup. But it’s because Five is so trained with it that it works. Five is an assassin who trained for 80 years, decades more time than his siblings had. He has the highest kill count in the show behind Victor (but if the kill count doesn’t count accidental kills, then Five wins by a long shot, as Victor did not want to destroy the world). Five has the best fighting skills in the family and is also one of the smartest, being a significant contributor to all plans they make.

2 Alison

“I heard a rumor.” It’s a phrase that Alison says, followed by anything she wants, and people will do it when they hear it. She controls another person’s free will, bending it to her desires. This power fundamentally scares people, as no one wants their own will to be turned into someone else’s. She is ranked high on this list as she has the power to control anyone on the list and is a decent hand-to-hand fighter if needed to use self-defense.

1 Victor (Previously Vanya)

As the person who was almost the cause of the apocalypse twice, it’s no question that Victor is at the top of this list. Victor can beat any of his siblings if he wants, and only in recent seasons does he try to train his ability a little. However, he seems to have a good grasp on it when we see him suddenly threaten someone in the most recent season, making things shake and flicker around them.

This list can quickly change after the next season if different characters learn more about their ability, and perhaps some make their way back into the living. Season Four of The Umbrella Academy will premiere in 2023 or 2024 and is said to be the series’ last season.
