Sony has big plans for Uncharted, with the studio reportedly planning to launch a major new franchise with multiple sequels. Despite the critical lashing that the first outing received when it hit theaters earlier this year. The news of Sony’s intentions comes from notable insider Jeff Sneider and The Ankler, and states that Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman is “excited” about returning to the video game adaptation for more adventures.
While Uncharted was met with largely negative reviews from critics, the movie did well financially, even becoming “the third-highest-grossing video game adaptation domestically,” as stated in the report. Many will be wondering whether a sequel to Uncharted is really the right way to go, but others will no doubt be excited to see more from Tom Holland as the intrepid adventurer Nathan Drake.
“Yes, Uncharted is a franchise now. Sony hasn’t officially confirmed a sequel, but the film did pretty respectable pandemic business, taking in $400 million worldwide, and Holland has discussed the likelihood of a sequel in past interviews. The studio has been unusually quiet, but seeing as how Uncharted is currently the third-highest-grossing video game adaptation domestically, and the fourth-highest-grossing worldwide, you can safely assume another Nathan Drake adventure is in the works. Ultimately, it’s Rothman’s call, but in his President’s Day memo to colleagues, he seemed excited about another installment.”

So, while Uncharted 2 has not yet been officially given the green light, it sounds like Sony is eager to continue the franchise for some time to come.
Uncharted Director Ruben Fleischer Would Love to Return for a Sequel
Sony Pictures Releasing
Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer has already declared his desire to return, should a sequel ever take shape. “I’d be thrilled at the opportunity to make a sequel and you can’t help working on this film for two years…I can’t help but imagine different adventures these guys might find themselves on and I’d be thrilled to figure out a way to bring those to life,” the filmmaker said. “But ultimately the audience will decide if that’s something they’re excited to see.”
Based on one of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed video game series of all time, the first Uncharted movie took its sweet time getting to the silver screen. Taking Nathan Drake back to his youth and acting as a prequel to the video game series, Uncharted tells the story of Nathan Drake and his very first adventure with Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as the quick-witted, wise-cracking, eventually mustachioed Sully, Uncharted will show audiences and fans how Nathan Drake became a treasure hunter as he unravels one of history’s greatest mysteries and treasures while tracking clues that may lead to Drake’s long-lost brother.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap) from a screenplay by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway, Uncharted stars Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, Pilou Asbæk, and Antonio Banderas as Moncada alongside Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as the bickering central duo.
Uncharted is scheduled to be released on Netflix on July 15, 2022.
