The romantic comedy-drama show Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris, was canceled from Netflix after only one season, according to a report from Variety. Show creators Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman released the series in July 2022, with eight episodes dropping simultaneously.

The Netflix show covers the life of a successful real estate agent in his mid-40s living in New York City and encountering a life-changing incident. Michael Lawson, played by Harris, has his life turned upside down after his partner of 17 years suddenly leaves him.

Michael finds himself a single gay man living alone in New York City and has to deal with a breakup and an abrupt change in his life.

Harris is most famous for his Emmy-winning role as Barney on the hit 2005 sitcom How I Met Your Mother, where he coincidentally also played a single man–for the most part–living in New York.

The cast includes other names like Tuc Watkins, Tisha Campbell, Brooks Ashmanskas, Emerson Brooks, and Marcia Gay Harden, playing different roles alongside Harris.

Although Uncoupled mostly received positive praise from viewers and critics, with a 73% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% approval from Google users, this was still not enough to make the show continue for a second season on the streaming service.

Furthermore, the show was not a big hit on Netflix compared to other original shows on the platform. It only made the top ten list once during the week it came out, placing number six on the streaming service, meaning that the show’s cancelation was foreseen and not a total surprise.

Other Netflix Shows: Some Renewed, Others Canceled

Co-creator Star is also the creator of the hit Netflix show Emily in Paris, which has been renewed for a fourth season, meaning that the cancelation of Uncoupled was not the end of Star’s work with Netflix.

Although Emily in Paris has a lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes than Uncoupled, with a 62% critical approval rating compared to the 73% rating, this does not set the standard when it comes to the number of viewers. 58 million households worldwide viewed the show starring Lily Collins in its first 28 days on Netflix.

The list of canceled Netflix shows has been rapidly growing, with shows like 1899, Inside Job, The Chair, and Dead End: Paranormal Park all canceled in January 2023 alone, keeping in mind that we are still in mid-January.

The cancelation of Uncoupled and other Netflix shows might disappoint viewers, though it is worth mentioning that the show wasn’t promised a second season anyway, meaning no finished work will be thrown out.
