The Undone team has brought some wonderful news to the South by Southwest Film Festival and Conferences (SXSW). First-look footage was debuted for an Undone panel which also included the announcement of season 2’s release date, which is April 29, 2022. The footage has been uploaded to YouTube by Prime Video in three separate clips which you’ll be able to watch below.
From acclaimed creators Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman), Undone is described as a half-hour, genre-bending animated dramedy that explores the elastic nature of reality through its central character, Alma (Rosa Salazar), a 28-year-old living in San Antonio, Texas alongside her mother Camila (Constance Marie) and sister Becca (Angelique Cabral). After getting into a car accident and nearly dying, Alma finds she has a new relationship to time. She develops this new ability in order to find out the truth about her father Jacob’s (Bob Odenkirk) death.

In season 2, Alma realizes there are deeper mysteries in her family’s past. However, no one in her family is interested in digging up uncomfortable truths with her—until she finally convinces her sister Becca to help her look. As the sisters search for answers, they unravel a complex network of memories and motivations that have shaped who they are today. They realize by healing this family trauma they can make all of their lives better.
Undone Is Brought to Life with Rotoscope Animation
The series is brought to life using rotoscope animation—a first for episodic television. The unique look of the animation, under the direction of Hisko Hulsing (Cobain: Montage of Heck), utilizes a variety of mediums, including oil painting on canvas to render the backgrounds. Amsterdam-based animation studio Submarine assembled an incredible team of artists and painters from all over Europe to bring all the animation elements to life, with the rotoscoping elements being handled by the veteran team behind A Scanner Darkly and Tower at Austin-based Minnow Mountain.
“I am a huge BoJack Horseman fan, so I already knew [Bob-Waksberg’s] writing and where he was coming from,” Rosa Salazar said of what drew her to the project, per Vulture. “He loves to investigate the dark side of life and how it coincides with the humorous side of life. And that’s exactly where I stem from. I know for a fact that comedy and tragedy are one.”
She added, “And they showed me a test they did, and I was so floored by the test itself. It was done in rotoscope — and by the very people that did my favorite movie, Waking Life, which I watched millions of times in my formative life. And I thought, Rotoscope, wow, this is the only way to do this show. It keeps the audience wondering, Are we in a dream, or are we in reality? And that’s where we wanted them to be.”
