While Marvel fans are foaming at the mouth for the arrival of Spider-Man: No Way Home this coming week, Thor: Love and Thunder has been getting some attention thanks to a new poster for the movie being spotted and shared online that appears to show the new costumes of Thor, Korg, Valkyrie and Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor. With the film not arriving until mid-2022, a few months after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is going to be a little wait before we see any official footage of the return of Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, but the new image that’s been spreading throughout social media, which Taika Waititi now says is not official, seems to give a new taste of what we can expect from the new sequel.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Thor: Love and Thunder is directed by Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waiti, who will be continuing in the same stylistic vein as his previous critically acclaimed run-out with the Avengers founding member, as Chris Hemsworth returns along with Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman playing Jane Foster for the first time since Thor: The Dark World – discounting her trickery-laced cameo in Avengers: Endgame - and a number of members of the Guardians of the Galaxy team including Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista. Joining the MCU for the first time in the fourth Thor solo movie will be Christian Bale as antagonist Gorr the God Butcher, Russell Crow as Zeus as well as Matt Damon and Melissa McCarthy making cameo appearances.
The film will be one of three Marvel movies coming in 2022, and while we know little about any of them so far, Thor: Love and Thunder is certainly one that stands out as an intriguing one for a number of reasons. Obviously, like Thor: Ragnarok, which brought Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk along for the ride, we once again see a crossover movie with the Guardians of the Galaxy playing some role in the film, having headed off with Thor in the final scenes of Avengers: Endgame. We also know that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will be transformed somehow into The Mighty Thor, and of course, there is where Thor himself is going to fit into a new multiverse narrative that is clearly going to define this and future Phases of the MCU.
However, while the poster does seem accurate in its depictions, director Waititi debunked it being one of the official posters of the movie, posting on Twitter, “This is so bad that I kinda wish it was an official poster. It’s definitely what I would have done if I was in charge of posters.”
As well as showing off the new costumes of the major heroes of the movie, the poster also brings a look at Thor’s mythical goats, which were seen on set during filming and take a prime place in the new artwork, but the one thing that really stands out is the emphasis on Portman’s Mighty Thor, with the character appearing multiple times on the poster, including a huge headshot that encompasses the entire width of the piece.
While there have been a number of questions just how Jane Foster’s transformation will impact Thor’s future in the franchise, Chris Hemsworth recently discussed his Marvel future when rumors suggested a new Spider-Man trilogy being in the works. With Thor being the first of the Avengers to get his own fourth solo movie, there is clearly a lot of love out there for the character and he told Australia’s Today, he said, “As long as they’ll have me, I’ll turn up. But I feel like there might be waning, that kind of enthusiasm for me." While we can only see what happens further down the line, it is likely that Thor: Love and Thunder may not be the last time we see Hemsworth bringing the thunder to the MCU.
