Legendary actor Val Kilmer has declared his desire to return to some of his most iconic roles, both of which occurred in 1995, including Heat character Chris Shiherlis and Bruce Wayne aka Batman, a role he played just once in Batman Forever. In an interview with IGN’s Jim Vejvoda, Kilmer addressed returning to the latter role, responding to the idea of playing Batman/Bruce Wayne in a future cameo with a pretty clear “Yea, please.”
Kilmer starred in the role of DC icon Batman in 1995’s Batman Forever, which finds The Dark Knight facing off against both Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face and Jim Carrey’s the Riddler all while taking a protégé, Chris O’Donnell’s Dick Grayson, under his wing. Batman Forever received mixed reviews from critics, but Kilmer’s performance was well-liked. Particularly by Batman co-creator Bob Kane, who called Kilmer his favorite live action representation of how he saw not only Batman, but Bruce Wayne as well.

Of course, bringing Kilmer back as Batman or Bruce Wayne for a cameo would be a lot less difficult these days, thanks to the emergence of the cinematic multiverse. The upcoming The Flash is due to open the door to the DC multiverse (if it ever gets released) and will feature Batman Returns star Michael Keaton once again under the cape and cowl. Should the love for Easter eggs and cameos continue, no doubt an appearance from Val Kilmer would be a hugely crowd-pleasing moment.
Val Kilmer Would Love to Once Again Work with Michael Mann on Heat 2
Warner Bros. Pictures
Aside from Batman, Val Kilmer also expressed his desire to once again work alongside director Michael Mann on a sequel to the crime drama Heat. “We’re seeing so many films now get a sequel years later. Are there any of your other early films you’d love to see a follow-up to?” IGN’s Jim Vejvoda asked the actor, to which he replied, “HEAT would be fun. I love Michael Mann. We get along great and we have a great deal of trust…”
As it happens, Heat 2 has already happened. In book form. Though director Michael Mann has since expressed his desire to bring the sequel to the big screen. “This is a book, but it’s also going to be a very large movie,” Michael Mann teased recently, before revealing that work has already begun on the adaptation. “Yes, I can’t talk about it, but yes,” the filmmaker said when asked if we would ever see Heat 2 on screen.
Released way back in 1995, the first Heat follows the conflict between an LAPD detective (Al Pacino) and a career criminal (Robert De Niro), exploring how these two careers affect their professional relationships and personal lives. Heat 2 meanwhile will cover “the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and elite criminals Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), and Nate (Jon Voight),” with the story leading up to the events of the first outing before moving beyond it.
Val Kilmer has faced some personal tragedies, with the actor struggling privately with throat cancer. Kilmer has since undergone a procedure on his trachea that has resulted in extreme difficulty speaking. Despite this, the actor recently made a triumphant return in Top Gun: Maverick, with his cameo a clear highlight in the hugely successful movie. No doubt audiences would love to see more of Val Kilmer on the big screen in the near future.
