Over the past two years, we have seen plenty of movies and TV shows get delayed because of the pandemic. B.J. Novak’s Vengeance was one of those films; however, according to Deadline, Novak’s directorial debut now has a theatrical summer release date of July 29th, 2022. The movie will be a new approach for Novak as this movie takes us into a new realm of dark comedy.

Focus Features has been chiefly known for films like the recently Oscar-nominated Belfast and Licorice Pizza, but they are no stranger to genre-bending films as they also have released movies like Last Night in Soho. Blumhouse has made a career in horror, thrillers, and horror comedies. They are probably best known for bringing franchises like Halloween back to life and the Happy Death Day series, which is perhaps their best-known dark comedy.

Here’s What We Know About Vengeance

The new film is being called a dark comedy thriller. It follows Novak, who plays “Ben Manalowitz, a journalist and podcaster who travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was hooking up with. The film is being produced by Jason Blum, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath, while Leigh Kilton-Smith, Christopher H. Warner, and Novak are serving as executive producers. The cast of the film includes Issa Rae, Ashton Kutcher, Boyd Holbrook, J. Smith-Cameron, and Dove Camero. Further details of the film have not been released.

Novak is mainly known for his comedic roles, like his roles on The Office and The Mindy Project. This will be a considerable change of direction for him, and it will be interesting to see what Novak will bring to this genre and unique story. Just another interesting fact about the release date. The July 29th date means the film will be going up against Dwayne Johnson’s highly-anticipated Black Adam, which releases on that date as well. Both films are ready to make an impact as theaters continue to build an exciting return with new releases. We are yet to see a trailer for Novak’s directorial debut, but I would imagine that one would be dropped sooner rather than later. Be sure to follow MovieWeb for any news regarding this film.
