While Crimes of the Future hasn’t even arrived in theatres yet, Variety has confined that David Cronenberg already has his next film lined up. Cronenberg, known for his directorial work in The Fly and Dead Ringers, will write and direct a new thriller titled The Shrouds. It will star Vincent Cassel in the main role.

Cassel will play Kash, a man whose revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when a horrendous attack happens. The graves within his cemetery, including the one that belongs to his wife, are vandalized and nearly destroyed. In the process of trying to uncover a clear motive for this attack, Kash will reevaluate his business, marriage, and fidelity to his late wife’s memory and be pushed to new beginnings.

Cassel’s other film credits include Black Swan, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen. He started his career in France in 1988 in both television and cinema. He wouldn’t get his big break until 1995, when he appeared in La Haine. After that, he went on to act in more than 80 films in France and the United States.

The Shrouds would not be the first time we have seen a collaboration between Cassel and Cronenberg. Previously, the two of them have teamed up for two separate films. The first was Eastern Promises, a midwife entangled with the Russian underworld. The second was A Dangerous Method, which details the beginning of Carl Jung’s career in psychoanalysis through the lens of the people who knew him.

The Shrouds Ticket Sales and Distribution

While filming for The Shrouds is expected to begin in March 2023, Cannes will launch sales on the film during this month. Ben Saïd (SBS Productions) will produce The Shrouds alongside Martin Katz (Prospero Pictures). CAA Media Finance will handle the U.S. Sales, while FilmNation Entertainment will oversee the international distribution.

“We are thrilled to be going on a journey into the newest world from the distinctive imagination of David Cronenberg. His ability to write smart and unconventional screenplays and then translate them into unique experiences on screen makes him a unique voice in film,” said Saïd.

FilmNation will have several other films premiering at Cannes as well. Rupert Sander’s The Crow reboot starring Bill Skarsgård. Last Breathe, a thriller starring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Djimon Hounsou. And Knox Goes Away, which will have Michael Keaton as both its director and star.

No other cast members have been announced as attached to The Shrouds. Neither has a release date for the film been made, most likely because the film is still far away from coming out. In the meantime, fans of Cronenberg’s signature brand of body horror and existential themes will have Crimes of the Future, starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart, to sate them in the meantime.

Robert Newman, WME, and Joel Behr of Behr, Abramson, Levy represent Cronenberg. CAA and Joel Behr represent Saïd. Hall Webber LLP represents Katz.
