The sequel to Violent Night is in development with the same creative team that brought the original to life to great success in December. Featuring David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) as the most badass version of Santa Claus cinema has ever seen, the holiday action flick follows St. Nick as he works to save a family who’s been taken hostage. The movie was well received by filmgoers, turning out to be a hit at the box office and fueling speculation that a sequel announcement is imminent.
Now, via TheWrap, director Tommy Wirkola confirms that the process of making Violent Night 2 has officially begun. Of course, the plan is for Harbour to return as Santa Claus to save more Christmases in the most violent way, but the same team will also be there on the other side of the camera. Wirkola says he’ll be back in the director’s chair while Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the duo who wrote the first film, will also be co-writing Violent Night 2. As Wirkola says when asked if the sequel is officially a go:

The only caveat to this good news is that production is not going to happen in the immediate future. Wirkola and the screenwriters are not looking for Violent Night 2 to be rushed, instead preferring to take their time to craft out a follow-up story that everyone is happy with. Even so, there are some ideas that are already in mind, as Wirkola teases.

The plot has yet to be figured out, but Wirkola was able to offer some hints about the sequel. He refers to the original plans that were in place to include elements like the elves and Mrs. Claus in the first film before they were scrapped. As Wirkola explains, those ideas could end up getting used for part two.
Violent Night was released on Digital on Jan. 20; its Blu-ray and DVD release is coming on Jan. 24, 2023. You can watch the film’s official trailer below.
