AMC announced the release timeline for their upcoming The Walking Dead spin-offs, Dead City, Daryl Dixon and Rick & Michonne. Following last year’s conclusion of The Walking Dead, AMC today revealed that long-running sister show Fear the Walking Dead is to end with its upcoming 8th season, but fans shouldn’t expect to be going without when it comes to Walking Dead content. Three new spin-offs are coming, and now we have a better idea of when to expect them.
First up will be the Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan-led Dead City, which will see their respective characters of Negan and Maggie heading off to New York City, and will make its debut in June 2023. This will be followed toward the end of the year by the European adventure of Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon, before Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grime makes his long awaited comeback in Rick & Michonne in 2024. The Walking Dead Universe’s chief content officer Scott M. Gimple said in a statement:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“’The Walking Dead’ Universe LIVES! To conclude ‘Fear The Walking Dead,’ we’re thrilled to be bringing you one of its most vibrant, inventive, exciting seasons EVER, while breaking new ground with old favorites: Maggie and Negan in the madhouse of post-apocalyptic Manhattan with no one to depend on but each other…Daryl Dixon in France, a loner who cannot move through this new dangerous world alone, facing vicious enemies and never-seen-before threats of the undead. And Rick and Michonne, in a romantic saga of the dangerous road to each other, and the road they must find with each other, cornered by a new civilization and hordes of the dead. Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, showrunner Eli Jorné, Norman Reedus, showrunner David Zabel, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln are creating heart-wrenching, heart-pounding magic for the next phase of the TWDU!”
The Walking Dead Has A Mountain To Climb When It Comes To Viewership
AMC
The Walking Dead aired its first season back in 2010, to good reviews and a strong 5.3 million audience. Over the first several seasons viewership grew year on year, building to a peak of 17.3 million viewers who tuned into learn who Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan battered to death in the opening episode of season 7. From that point on though, the series lost almost six million viewers by the debut of season 8, and another six by season 9. When the series ended November 2022, it was watched by just 2.27 million people.
Now, AMC will be hoping that the branching storylines of its three new spin-offs, all focusing on one or two fan favorite characters, can win back interest from some of those who abandoned the main series. Despite dwindling viewership across all of its shows, The Walking Dead Universe is certainly not done yet, but where it goes beyond 2024 will likely rely a lot on how the new spin-off shows are received.
The final season of The Walking Dead is now available on Netflix US.
