After the resounding success of The Batman, fans should expect more DC movies to be along the same lines—standalone and boasting a unique vision. Warner Bros. Pictures Chairman Toby Emmerich recently shared his vision for the DC Extended Universe and said that moving forward, the studio will prioritize quality over everything else. Talking to Deadline, Emmerich said:
It’s true that The Batman doesn’t take place in the main DCEU timeline, but the film will kickstart its own shared universe. Two HBO Max series centered on the Gotham City Police Department and Colin Farrell’s Penguin are already in development, and multiple sequels to The Batman are planned. There are also two separate Superman movies in development, both presumably taking place in their own universes as well. Plus, the recently aired Peacemaker finale confirmed that Henry Cavill’s Superman and the Justice League still exists in the DCEU, further complicating the timeline.
“The secret of the movie business is quality. It’s the best business strategy for both theatrical motion pictures and superhero movies. The movies don’t have to all have the same tone, or interlock with other DC movies, or have an Easter egg that sets up another film. Quality is the most important factor for a studio, and the biggest thing you can do to influence quality is the filmmaker that you hire.”

But unlike Marvel and Disney, Warner Bros. and DC Films don’t seem to be concerned with having a well-defined plan as long as the individual movies are doing fine commercially and critically.
Judging by Emmerich’s statement, WB will continue its filmmaker-driven approach that has mostly worked in their favor. After the troublesome production of 2017’s Justice League and its subsequent box-office failure, WB has seemingly given a free rein to directors. All the DC films released in the last 5 years feature distinct tones and few connections to each other. And all of them, barring WW84, have been well-received. The upcoming movies Black Adam and The Flash will likely follow the same path as well.
WB and DC Films’ strategy seems to be working for now and definitely makes their content stand apart from the competition. But for how long, it remains to be seen.
Will Robert Pattinson Return For More Movies After The Batman?
Warner Bros.
The Batman has already broken several pandemic-era box office records with its $250 million opening weekend haul. Apparently, a turbulent global situation, high ticket prices, and a 3-hour runtime aren’t enough to deter moviegoers from checking out the latest iteration of the iconic superhero. The Batman is on the way to recouping its $185 million budget and turning a significant profit. Two HBO Max series are already happening, and two sequels are planned, with Matt Reeves in talks to return.
Robert Pattinson’s compelling performance is the highlight of The Batman and has received unanimous praise from fans and critics alike. He has certainly silenced his critics and sealed himself as one of Hollywood’s finest actors. Although The Batman 2 hasn’t officially been greenlit, it is expected to happen. Pattinson has expressed the possibility of facing the Court of Owls in the sequel. With The Batman being the biggest film in the world right now, and judging by film studios’ preference for profits, a sequel is all but certain to happen. Hopefully, it will arrive soon.
The Batman is currently playing exclusively in theaters worldwide and will debut on HBO Max on April 19, 2022.
