Lionsgate Pictures has released the first five minutes of Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall online. The film stars Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson as two astronauts who must unravel the mystery behind the Moon to prevent the oncoming apocalypse. You can check out the intense clip below.
The Moon is literally falling in Moonfall after being knocked off its orbit by a destructive force. In the above clip, we get a glimpse of this blob-like thing that is hellbent on devouring everything in its way. The Moonfall opening scene begins in outer space with somber music playing in the background that soon morphs into Toto’s “Africa.” Then we see a couple of astronauts working on their ship while pondering over the lyrics. But things take a turn for the worse when they are hit by a shapeless object that hurls Marcus (Frank Fiola) away while Brian (Patrick Wilson) is left spinning.

As Brian makes his way into the ship, he finds an unconscious Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) and desperately tries to locate Marcus. But it’s a lost cause as Marcus has disappeared into the abyss. “I’m gonna get you home,” Brian tells Jo, but it’s easier said than done as we see the mysterious force digging on the surface of the Moon. The scene was quite reminiscent of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity in terms of the space carnage, but it also features an otherworldly twist. Apocalypse and Roland Emmerich are two terms that have become synonymous with each other. The German filmmaker is best known for directing films like Independence Day, 2012, and The Patriot.
We’ve seen ice-age, alien invasions, and giant lizards wreaking havoc on the planet in Emmerich’s movies, but this time he’s taken it up a notch. While conceiving Moonfall, Emmerich was inspired by the hollow moon conspiracy theory. In addition to directing, Emmerich has also written the screenplay with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. The plot synopsis for Moonfall is as follows:
Well, that sounds interesting enough. Hopefully, Moonfall will be an improvement over Roland Emmerich’s last disaster epic, Independence Day: Resurgence. Alongside Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson, Moonfall also stars John Bradley (Game of Thrones), Michael Peña (End of Watch), Donald Sutherland (Hunger Games), Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete), and Eme Ikwuakor (Inhumans). Made on a massive budget of $150 million and featuring breathtaking visuals, Moonfall is a must-watch in IMAX.
In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson), and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley) believes her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.
Moonfall storms into theaters on February 4, 2022.
