Finding an actor to replicate Mike Tyson’s outlandish personality was no easy task, but Hulu has found their man with Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight). The trailer for Mike, which was just released, depicts Tyson at different points in his career.

“You may know Tyson. But do you know Mike?” the trailer asks, suggesting audiences will get a deeper look into the life of Mike Tyson, aside from all the press and controversy that surrounded the boxer throughout his career. And there certainly will be a ton of controversy to dissect in the series, which showrunner Karin Gist promises will make its way into the show. The trailer for the forthcoming limited series can be found below.

Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and lost his boxing license two years later when he fought Evander Holyfield and ferociously bit his ear. Gist spoke with EW discussing their goal with the series and how they won’t shy away from some low points in Tyson’s life.

Hulu announced the series with a poster on Twitter, and the post can be found here.

“The show is not supposed to be a love letter or an indictment, which is why we had to include all the good, the bad, and the complexities of both. Fortunately, as a global society, we are all talking more and more about things that were once taboo or only whispered about among friends — rape, sexual assault, consent to name a few. Putting stories like this in the spotlight and pulling them out of the shadows is crucial to moving forward and getting the conversation to the next level. The goal was not to shy away from the scary or uncomfortable parts of the story just because they are scary and uncomfortable.

Who’s Involved in Hulu’s Mike Tyson Biopic

Steven Rogers wrote the series’ pilot episode, following up on his 2017 film, I, Tonya. The two stories share striking similarities, focusing on famous athletes whose stories may be misunderstood by the public. Speaking to EW, Rogers had this to say:

Russell Hornsby (Fences), Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs), Laura Harrier (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Li Eubanks (If Not Now, When?) are joining Rhodes. Mike premieres on Hulu on Aug. 25th.

“I think the thing people responded to in I, Tonya was, we took a story everyone thought they knew and we tried to show there’s much more to it than just the sound bites the media gives us. Then one of us said, ‘What about doing that with Mike Tyson?’ I clicked to that because to me, his story is so compelling, contradictory, and complex. In some ways, it’s a cautionary tale of the American Dream. It also seemed like quite a ride. And you can find the roots of a lot of issues we’re grappling with today like #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, prison reform, mental health issues in it. It seemed like a good time to tell it.”
