When it comes to Saturday Night Live sketch spin-offs, few have been as memorable or endearing as the Mike Myers and Dana Carvey hit Wayne’s World and its sequel. In an interview with Screen Rant, original Wayne’s World director Penelope Spheeris discussed the movie, her disappointment at not being able to direct the follow-up, and also shared her opinion that Wayne’s World 2 ultimately happened too soon after the first movie. While the films helped launch the careers of its two leads, the need to get a second film out became urgent when Wayne’s World debuted as a massive hit in 1992, and it took only a year to get the sequel onto the big screen.

While it is pretty standard for certain movies to release annually, with the likes of Saw and Paranormal Activity making their bid for Halloween glory over a number of consecutive years, for Spheeris, the way Wayne’s World 2 was put together felt too quick and for several reasons, she decided not to be involved, but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t constantly contacted about returning make Wayne’s World 3. She said:
After Almost Thirty Years, Is the Time Right for Wayne’s World 3?

While Spheeris was happy to admit that she decided not to return for Wayne’s World 2, she has previously made it clear that rumors of a falling out between her and Mike Myers were untrue and not the reason she opted out of the sequel. The question is, with a lot of people still attempting to send her storylines and proposals for a third movie, and nostalgic 90’s returns being all the rage, is there a possibility that we will see Wayne’s World 3?
Essentially, whether we get a new Wayne’s World movie seems to rest on whether Paramount wants to make one. Considering they are currently looking for new projects to bolster their Paramount+ platform, then there could be worse ways to go than with a new Wayne’s World movie or even a TV series. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey have recently brought their characters from the film back to life in brief SNL sketches and in commercials, which clearly shows that the characters are still in them somewhere to tap into. Fans will no doubt be hoping for a new installment sometime in the future, but if that doesn’t happen, then we always have the first two films to fall back on.
