After five weeks on release, and having slipped from the Number 1 spot, Wednesday should be starting to slip down the Netflix TV chart. However, after being temporarily displaced to second and third place, the Tim Burton-directed series has somehow reclaimed its place at the top of the Netflix TV Chart.

Since launching on November 23, Wednesday has blown away all competition to maintain a run as the top TV show on Netflix. In addition to this, the show shattered a Stranger Things record of the most hours viewed in a week, and then went on to break its own record the following week. It recently became the second most watched series in Netflix history, but technically beating Stranger Things Season 4 by ratio due to having half the running length of the horror fantasy show.

Now after briefly losing its crown to a rotating roll call of new shows including Harry and Meghan, Emily In Paris, The Recruit and The Witcher: Blood Origin, Wednesday saw a new spike in interest that allowed it to overtake all of these shows to be Netflix’s most watched show once again. Yet still there has been no word from Netflix on when news of a second season will be officially announced.

Wednesday Has Out Performed Every Expectation Since Its Debut

Wednesday debuted on Netflix in November, with many fans asking why it had not been released around the time-appropriate Halloween period. While it seemed that the series could have missed its chance to capitalize on the Halloween market, its first few days on release proved that the timing of the show’s release had no impact at all on its popularity.

As well as receiving higher Rotten Tomatoes scores than every other Addams Family release other than the 60s TV series, Wednesday charged up the chart of Netflix’s most watched shows of 2022. Surpassing other popular shows like The Watcher, The Sandman, Bridgerton season 2 and Dahmer, Wednesday has ended the year behind only Stranger Things season 4 having racked up 1.3 billion hours viewed.

The real crux of the figures comes when considering that Wednesday has a runtime of around 7 hours compared to the insane 13 hours of Stranger Things season 4. Based on the belief that audiences watched the entire season of both shows, that would suggest 143.8 million subscribers watched Stranger Things, while 185.7 million watched Wednesday. While these figures are obviously not exact, they certainly give a lot of weight to the fan campaigns demanding a renewal from Netflix.

Obviously, Netflix will only make an announcement about the future of Wednesday once they are good and ready, but it is hard to foresee an outcome that doesn’t involve the show getting at least one more season. However, there are certainly plans being considered for other potential spin-offs from Wednesday by the series showrunners, and it would not be surprising to see at least some of those make it to production in the foreseeable future too.
