Additionally, the platform mentions Wednesday’s “rented intellectual property” status grants Netflix the rights to handle the series’ future distribution for a select amount of time:
“Our understanding of how this works is that Netflix essentially owns the ‘option’ for the title for a fixed period of time, which means Netflix has ultimate control over the future of the series for the foreseeable future. Our intel suggests that if the show is not renewed for a season 2, Netflix hangs onto season 1 for ten years following its release (meaning it’ll stream until 2032).”
Wednesday’s Future Seasons Are Already Planned Out According to the Show’s Co-Creator
Netflix, 2022.
It would be a colossal disappointment to witness the cancelation of Wednesday after the record-breaking run it’s had. The show has accumulated critical acclaim and a fervent fanbase in the short duration since its November release. Moreover, Netflix executive Peter Friedlander remains optimistic about the show’s future, so the likelihood of renewal seems promising. For now, the waiting game continues to see if the streamer decides to greenlight a second season. But thankfully, the co-creators are already prepared to pen the next season’s script upon renewal.
When speaking on the future season, co-creator Miles Millar said:
“For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that, hopefully, the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters. Often, you want to see which characters or cast pop, and who you like to write for. So you want to keep it open and organic enough to change it and evolve, but we certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons.”
