Phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has taken a dive into the supernatural. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness began the descent, with Loki season one offering throwaway lines about vampires and werewolves. These stories have teased audiences about the horror-filled future. Within weeks, the universe is inching closer to its first Halloween special premiering on October 7th on Disney+.
Werewolf by Night is the MCU’s introduction to the first true monster seen on screen in the universe. The special’s story follows a group of monster hunters gathering at Bloodstone Castle after their leader’s death. Converging at the castle, competition will occur for an ancient relic. This brings the group face to face with a terrifying monster with a prosperous MCU future.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
The trailer for Werewolf By Night gave audiences a horrifying taste of what is in store, including zombies, cults, and gory action. Besides delights for horror fans, the trailer teased larger universe Easter eggs. The most notable of those included the Time Variance Authority, the police of the multiverse. For the more obscure Easter eggs, the trailer introduced us to Laura Donnelly’s character, Elsa Bloodstone. Add in Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell/Werewolf by Night, and it begs to ask an important question. What is Werewolf by Night’s potential future in the MCU?
Three Places for Werewolf By Night in the MCU
Marvel Studios
Werewolf by Night will be one of the MCU’s most obscure characters. Being a literal monster, he is a vicious and unpredictable creature. The character can go in a multitude of directions. Most of these involve characters like Doctor Strange and Blade, but that is not all. Werewolf by Night has three possible scenarios of how he could be integrated into the MCU going forward.
The first option would be in the supernatural team Midnight Sons, a supernatural group of superheroes. This seems like the most likely direction, but there are some other possibilities. He could also appear in the second season of Loki through the TVA’s nightmare department. A final choice for his future would be an appearance in Moon Knight season two, where the character made his first comic appearance in 1975.
The Creation of a New Supernatural Team
Marvel Comics
The most likely direction of Werewolf By Night could be in the superhero team-up Midnight Sons. The dark and cosmic superheroes included Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, and Blade. This group of heroes would be the most obvious place for Werewolf by Night to reside. The groundwork for this team-up seems to be getting in place with characters like Doctor Strange already on the board after numerous MCU appearances. After the events of Multiverse of Madness and the film after the credits sequence, it seems more interdimensional and scary threats are rising. Who could be better than Werewolf by Night to help lighten the load of supernatural characters?
This team could also be how Werewolf by Night is broken out of his black-and-white timeline. The special could directly tie into the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after-credit sequence of Charlize Theron’s Clea, or Doctor Strange himself could arrive seeking Jack Russell’s help with an incursion. It would be a clever nod to the initial after-credits sequence in Iron Man, the “Avengers Initiative, " and tease a new future team.
We have gotten black-and-white MCU content with WandaVision, having Scarlet Witch be able to control the color of the universe. Werewolf by Night could follow the same method and have Doctor Strange bring color to the universe. This could also lead to the TVA becoming involved in the special.
A Possible Appearance in Loki Season 2
Disney Platform Distribution
Seeing that the TVA is involved gives weight to the nightmare department theory. Season one of Loki ends with Kang the Conqueror essentially having control of the entire TVA. Werewolf by Night could lead into the events of Loki’s second season, with the creature coming face-to-face with the god of mischief.
This is another likely possibility as it could directly tie into Phase 4, amply titled the Multiverse Saga. Particularly when the director of the season confirms it will be more of a Multiversal adventure than Doctor Strange 2. The timeline is in disarray after the events of season one, so a Werewolf could be the next step in chaos ensuing. Plus, who wouldn’t love to see actors like Gael Garcia Bernal and Tom Hiddleston interact? Their conversations would make for some incredibly entertaining content.
An Appearance Inspired by Werewolf by Night’s Comic Origins
It would be enjoyable to see the character cross paths with the first hero Werewolf by Night fought in his comic introduction. The character’s appearance in the unconfirmed Moon Knight season two is the least likely to happen. Moon Knight focused on minimal references to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, we still have yet to receive an official confirmation that season two of Moon Knight is happening. What better place for Werewolf by Night to go than being face-to-face with one of his first foes? One of Moon Knight’s first-ever comic appearances would make an excellent adaption for new MCU actors and feed into the supernatural angle of the universe.
A character such as Werewolf by Night has endless directions to go. Having the Multiverse Saga, the character has the potential to appear anywhere. He could be Marvel’s first horror-genre-like character or someone involved in a new team. The sort of fresh take on the genre could be an answer for those tired of the MCU. It is an exciting proposition that comic-book fans hope will deliver. If the trailer for Werewolf By Night was any indication, his introduction will lead to endless and exciting possibilities.
