What If…? is one of the most thought-provoking MCU shows we’ve seen in years. It premiered on Disney+ in 2021 and ran for nine episodes before leaving the viewers on the edge of their seats with The Watcher quoting the words, “You thought the story was over…but it was only just the beginning.” With a stunning finale, What If…? leaves plenty of room for more episodes with endless possibilities.

Adapting from Marvel Comics’ What If…?, the animated series explores the various alternate timelines set in the multiverse and demonstrates what consequences await those who dare to mess with it. In addition to the intriguing character of The Watcher, the series was made worthwhile by many exciting scenarios, such as what if Captain Carter were the first avenger and what if Ultron won. Considering what the multiverse has to offer, Marvel Studios has already renewed the show for the second and third seasons. While little is known about the third season, here’s what we do know about What If…? season 2.

What If…? Season 2: The Plot

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel unveiled the trailer for the second season, leading us to speculate on what exciting events might occur in the coming season. Following the events of season 1, season 2 begins with a battle, but this time Captain Carter is pitted against Steve Rogers, who is piloting the HYDRA Stomper. It implies that, instead of Bucky, HYDRA captures Steve, and we see Captain America: Winter Soldier, with Captain America as Peggy Carter and Winter Soldier as Steve Rogers.

As the trailer indicated, we will see Hela in a different light in further episodes. It could somehow overlap with Captain Carter, who inadvertently stepped through a dimensional door and traveled to the future. Following these events, we see Quill being delivered to his father, Ego, implying another what-if scenario. The most exciting part, however, is Scarlet Witch’s entrance when The Watcher yells, “The Multiverse.” It could be a foreshadowing of a what-if scenario in the film Multiverse of Madness, where things got out of hand.

As we go along with the trailer, we see Odin fighting against Wenwu and Ying Li, which is quite an intriguing setting. Later, the events are set in the Infinity War, where Captain America destroys the time stone, causing yet another messed-up timeline. From the looks of it, the second season will feature more complicated and compelling what-if scenarios.

Release Date

Despite announcing the renewal of the second and third seasons when season 1 concluded, Marvel did not provide a specific release date. However, as announced at the San Diego Comic-Con 2022 and on the official Marvel website, What If…? season 2 will premiere in early 2023. The head writer and executive producer of What If…?, Ashley C. Bradley, revealed her plans for the second season in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

While Marvel prepares for the next phase and delves deeper into the Multiverse concept, What If…? season 2 is highly likely to deliver content that surpasses the first season. Contrary to popular belief, the first season deviated into darker territory without holding back on the circumstances. Fans would be thrilled to see similar themes in the second season, featuring more intriguing storylines and mind-blowing twists. While you wait for What If…? season 2 and celebrate the renewal of the third season, you might want to check out these MCU Shows coming to Disney+ in 2023.

“Going into the second season, we’re sticking with the anthology form, and it’s going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were able to this season. Hopefully, we’ll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters. The fun of What If…? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try to bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we’ve got to share the love. I’m very excited to show new worlds, new heroes.”
