With the Marvel multiverse now well and truly unleashed, audiences have been left wondering when the second season of the animated anthology series with the multiversal madness at its center, What If…?, will return. Well, according to creator A. C. Bradley, What If…? will return with its second season sometime in 2022.

Taking to Twitter to confirm a recent report by The Direct, A. C. Bradley confirmed the news that What If…? will be back later this year saying, “See you later this year, kids!" The first season premiered back in August on Disney+, and explores alternate timelines in the multiverse, showing what would happen if major moments from the MCU movies occurred differently. Introducing variant versions of several beloved characters, including Thor, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther, What If…? also formed a superhero team named The Guardians of the Multiverse.

Not much is yet known about the second series, though Bradley has previously revealed that it will involve several characters and movies from the most recent MCU Phase, such as Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Eternals, as well as continuing the adventures of Peggy Carter as the variant super-soldier Captain Carter.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe multiverse began to truly collapse thanks to the events of the first season of the Disney+ series, Loki. Since then, the likes of the animated series What If…? has introduced audiences to the idea of “variants” (alternate versions of popular characters from different universes) with the recent big-screen outing, Spider-Man: No Way Home, doubling down on this idea by bringing previous Peter Parkers Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire into the fray.

This multiversal chaos will seemingly get even worse in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which finds The Master of the Mystic Arts traveling across various universes. Directed by Sam Raimi, written by Michael Waldron, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the first season of Loki. Dr. Stephen Strange, with the help of both old and new mystical allies, travels into the multiverse to face a mysterious new adversary. An adversary who happens to look very familiar…

As well as showing us much more of the multiverse, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will continue to introduce variants, including several different versions of Doctor Strange himself. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will also bring back characters from other Marvel franchises, with rumors claiming that Patrick Stewart will reprise the role of X-Men leader Professor Xavier, Ryan Reynolds will return as Deadpool, and Hayley Atwell will star as the live-action version of What If…? character Captain Carter.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU, with What If…? Season 2 likely to be affected by the events of the sequel.
