With the official green-light for its sequel, Vacation Friends 2, will follow two couples who initially met while staying at a local resort in Mexico. The adult-styled, buddy comedy stars John Cena (Ron) and Lil Rel Howery (Marcus) as they attempt to navigate their unusual friendship along with their romantic partners, Meredith Hagner (Kyla) and Yvonne Orji (Emily). In the first Vacation Friends film, Marcus plans out a romantic getaway for Emily, as he ultimately intends to ask for her hand in marriage.
After arriving at the hotel and learning their room has been flooded, happy-go-lucky couple, Ron and Kyla, invites the two to stay in their suite for the remainder of the trip. After a vacation filled with endless tequila shots, couple swapping, unintentional pregnancies, and never-ending adventures, Marcus and Emily leave Mexico with the hopes of never seeing Ron and Kyla again. Ron and Kyla, on the other hand, believe that Marcus and Emily are their new best friends. Fresh off the heels of a highly successful first film and quickly deemed Hulu’s most-watched original project ever for an opening weekend, the second installment is expected to surpass viewers’ expectations.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
From what we last heard, production was rumored to have announced the early phases in September of 2021, with original cast members expected to return. Hulu and the 20th Century’s sequel, titled Honeymoon Friends, will see Clay Tarver’s return writer and director. Since we don’t know much other than the sequel getting official approval to move ahead, let’s speculate possible storylines for the sequel.
Ron and Kayla Pop-Up Out of Thin Air
Hulu
As viewers will remember, Ron and Kayla showed up unexpectedly at Marcus and Emily’s wedding weekend towards the middle of Vacation Friends. This second installment will possibly revolve around Marcus and Emily, picking up where the film left off. As the couple head to their honeymoon destination, seeing Ron and Kyla already there, baby present and all, wreaking havoc (in the most endearing way).
When we last saw the two couples, Marcus and Emily tracked down Ron and Kyla at the local Waffle House in Atlanta (Ron and Kyla’s favorite restaurant, by the way), where they apologized for pushing the two away and insisted they come to their wedding. After the four finally make-up, we fast-forward to Ron and Kyla’s destination wedding, where we also see that Kyla has newly given birth to her and Ron’s son, little Marcus.
One of the main reasons fans of the film love all four characters is because they mirror each other in the most unconventional aspects. Emily, in a way, is inspired by the off-the-cuff relationship that Ron and Kayla have between each other. Kayla, on the other hand, wants to engage in adult-like conversations within her relationship with Ron that Marcus and Emily often undergo in important and crucial moments. Although the four leaves off on good terms, proclaiming to be best friends by the film’s ending, it isn’t far-fetched to see Marcus (specifically) being hilariously annoyed at the couple’s unanticipated pop-up in the near future.
Marcus and Emily Flip The Script
It wouldn’t be a surprise if we also see that Marcus and Emily have changed drastically and become a carefree couple while Ron and Kayla scale it back, becoming more conservative. Now that Ron and Kayla are parents, it would be expected that they have become increasingly reserved as a result of their newfound approach to parenting, toning down their previous antics after giving birth to little Marcus.
Who are we kidding? These two will never not be a great time, but with their fun and energetic ways rubbing off on Marcus and Emily, fans could potentially be in for a shock to see the couple initiate all the fun during the second film.
The Group of BFFs Merge Their Honeymoons
Ok, if this happened, it would be the coolest story set-up. Having the four friends intentionally travel on a second vacation together, getting themselves into some sticky situations while reunited, is juicy, and we’re all here for it. The couples, post-Vacation Friends, probably live down the street from one another, causing hell for the rest of their neighbors and intentionally spiking everyone’s tequila during neighborhood community events. Them hanging out on a regular basis is actually a no-brainer as we turn the page into this upcoming project.
If you couldn’t tell by now, we’re all waiting nervously in anticipation for Honeymoon Friends to release. As the projected date stays set for mid-2023, we’ll be here, re-watching the original, until we’re blessed with at least a trailer to hold us over.
