FX has renewed its acclaimed mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows for the fifth and sixth seasons. The news comes just days after the network announced the season 4 premiere date. FX’s What We Do in the Shadows is based on the 2014 film of the same name, directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. However, the series is not a reboot and takes place in the same universe, albeit on a different continent.

Created by Jemaine Clement, What We Do in the Shadows has been well-received by fans and critics alike. Some even believe the series is superior to the film. What We Do in the Shadows has been nominated for ten Emmy Awards, and FX is confident the series will continue its winning streak. Nick Grad, President of Original Programming at FX Entertainment, released a statement (via Deadline), saying:

What We Do In The Shadows Promises A Bigger, Weirder And More Emotional Season 4

What We Do in the Shadows centers on the daily and often mundane lives of four vampire roommates and their human familiar in Staten Island. The show stars Kayvan Novak as Nandor, Matt Berry as Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja, Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson, and Harvey Guillén as Guillermo.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of What We Do in the Shadows after the shocking cliffhanger ending of season 3. The series is also known for its surprise cameos and has previously featured Mark Hamill, Tilda Swinton, Benedict Wong, Evan Rachel Wood, and Wesley Snipes as a day-walking vampire. It remains to be seen what other surprises What We Do in the Shadows season 4 has in store for the viewers.

The official plot synopsis for What We Do in the Shadows season 4 reads:

“In the shocking season three finale, Nandor, Guillermo, and Nadja left Staten Island to go their separate ways while Laszlo stayed home to care for the creature that clawed its way out of the chest cavity of the deceased Colin Robinson — aka Baby Colin. This season, the vampires return to Staten Island to find their mansion on the verge of total structural collapse — and with no money to repair it. While Nandor’s eternal search for love finally yields results, Nadja finally realizes her dream of opening the hottest vampire nightclub in the Tri-State Area.

Laszlo struggles with the question of nature versus nurture as he tries raising Baby Colin to be anything other than an energy vampire. And even Guillermo finds himself on a powerful emotional track that touches on his love for his family, and for others.

With such terrifying locations as the secret supernatural Night Market, the Jersey Pine Barrens, and a wedding altar, and with more strange beasts, surprising guest stars, and tap dancing than ever, season four of What We Do in the Shadows continues to make the case for blood and comedy. And this time with just a touch of home renovation.”
