The Phineas and Ferb revival is officially on the way with 40 episodes ordered to span two seasons. Created by Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, Phineas and Ferb follows two stepbrothers who strive to make their summer vacation the best, most adventurous one possible. Every day their adventures involve building extremely ambitious and elaborate construction projects, which irritates Phineas’ older sister Candace who strives to reveal their projects to their mother whenever she can. However, such plans never come to fruition and the boys manage to skirt trouble every time, driving Candance wild. The show also has a subplot involving Phineas and Ferb’s pet platypus who is a secret agent working to destroy the evil plots of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz as he works to take over the world.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Phineas and Ferb spawned an array of movies and specials with its final episodes airing in June 2015. The series was one of Disney Channel’s most popular shows ever, so it’s no wonder their bringing it back. It garnered millions of viewers as well as multiple Primetime Emmy and Kids’ Choice Awards nominations and wins.
Although classified as a children’s show, the series contained plenty of pop culture references for parents to enjoy. Its meta humor coupled with its comedic timing and breaking of the fourth wall, helped it succeed in being a show everyone could enjoy together. Given it’s been nearly eight years since the duo graced the small screen, there are quite a few things fans want to see in the new episodes of Phineas and Ferb.
New Original Songs
Disney
One of the most entertaining aspects of Phineas and Ferb involves the original songs littered throughout the series, and fans fondly remember their delightful and witty addition to the show. A song can be found in nearly every episode of the series sung by the characters themselves or played over the scenes. The show was essentially a musical comedy about the stepbrother duo’s epic summer. With the revival comes the possibility of all new original songs fans are sure to enjoy.
Given Povenmire’s musical background, there’s no doubt he’ll bring the same kind of musical energy back to the show. New original songs would definitely excite the fan base and give audiences what they’ve been waiting for, the return of the much-beloved animated series.
More Meta Humor and Pop Culture References
Unlike other children’s shows, Phineas and Ferb possess a self-awareness it comfortably pokes fun at as well as an intelligence not seen in the majority of programming directed toward children. The way the show breaks the fourth wall is especially smart and humorous, and its ability to make current pop culture references made it a show adults could enjoy watching as well. It’s very clearly a mashup between something like Family Guy and SpongeBob SquarePants, two shows Povenmire was a part of before Phineas and Ferb, which make it the perfect show for both kids and adults.
Now that it’s been over 15 years since the premiere of the first episode, the 40-episode revival has a unique opportunity to include references for the adults who watched the show as kids who will more than likely tune in to the revival whenever it airs. Fans of the show who have grown up since watching the initial premiere are going to want more of the meta humor and pop culture references they might have overlooked as a kid. Even a nod to the fans of the series who are now adults would be great, and something viewers would appreciate.
Adventures with Phineas, Ferb, and Perry the Platypus Together
While Phineas and Ferb are busy building their projects and driving their sister insane, their pet platypus Perry has his hands full battling Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz’s efforts to take over the world. Unbeknownst to the stepbrother duo, Perry is a secret agent for the O.W.C.A. (Organization Without a Cool Acronym). While they discovered his secret identity in Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, they decided to enter an amnesia machine instead of losing Perry forever. They opted to forget his secret identity in order to prevent him from having to leave their home forever.
However, Perry remembers their time together when Phineas and Ferb knew his identity, which presents the revival with another opportunity. Perry’s storyline was a dynamic subplot in the original series, and the upcoming episodes would be the perfect time for the duo to rediscover Perry’s secret once again while somehow maintaining the information, at least for a while. The epic adventures Phineas, Ferb, and Perry could embark on would be delightful and worth exploring throughout the show’s newest episodes.
While there’s no release date for the new episodes of Phineas and Ferb just yet, Disney+ has all the previous episodes and specials available to stream right now.
