Who would have thought that after all the media frenzy and promotional hype surrounding the most talked about DC superhero flick for almost the last ten years, Black Adam would flounder upon initial release? Not only that but there was a second strike at bat when Dwayne Johnson was ripped away from the throne he wished for so long when James Gunn and Peter Safran were instead officially elected as the new DCU Studio bosses. The third and final strike regarding Johnson having any headway toward DCU leadership occurred when he released a statement on Twitter explaining how the new DCU presidents decided that Black Adam would not be in their first chapter of DC cinematic storytelling. Most would agree that this was quite an unlucky turn of events for The Rock.

Scorned by the film studio that he was working alongside for so long or just possibly shopping around for similar opportunities given his newly crowned experience in the comic book adaptation genre, rumors have been circulating that the former ten-time professional wrestling champion is jumping ship to Kevin Feige’s MCU sooner rather than later. Johnson could very well already be in advanced talks with MCU executives to play an undisclosed role in upcoming MCU projects. Fans all around the world are very much excited to hear that the famed actor is possibly making a return to the superhero world so let’s take a look at some of the roles which he can step into.

Johnson as a Dangerous Foe For The X-Men

     Marvel Comics

There have been theories that a notable X-Men villain will be offered to Dwayne Johnson if he does decide to step into Kevin Fiege’s MCU playground. First premiering in the sixth X-Men cinematic entry, X-Men: Apocalypse saw the big screen villainous debut of the title character who was once deemed as one of the strongest mutants in the Marvel comic books. While hardcore comic fans will say he certainly didn’t play out that way in the 2016 theatrical release, his character arc still has many possibilities.

Apocalypse has a long and storied run in print form, interacting with characters like The Avengers, The High Evolutionary, and Dracula himself at one point. Even though Oscar Isaac (who now plays Moon Knight in the MCU) did the best job he possibly could when he played the titular and menacing character the first time around, Dwayne Johnson could give a refreshing take on the role which would in turn, make the character more lasting and notable.

Rumors have been flying around regarding Chris Hemsworth’s departure from being Thor in the future. Teases that were made at the end of the Asgardian’s latest movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, may mean another character could possibly helm this mythical realm of the MCU soon enough.

Ares, the God of War, is one Greek figure who has not been seen on screen yet with the MCU, but all that could soon change if the alleged talks of Dwayne Johnson entering the MCU are true. A quick look into the character of Ares from within the context of Marvel Comics shows that he is currently part of the Dark Avengers, a militarized team brought together by Loki that consists of names like Skaar, U.S Agent, and Bullseye. Having Tom Hiddleston and Dwayne Johnson in the same movie, especially in the MCU, is certainly something that comic book fans cannot wait for. What makes this possibility that much more feasible is Ares and Loki both come from Thor’s corner of the MCU so let’s hope this happens soon.

It Could be Clobbering Time for The Rock

Marvel Comics / Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Another character from within the Marvel universe that we haven’t seen in a while is The Thing from The Fantastic Four. Last making an onscreen appearance in The Rise of The Silver Surfer sequel in 2007 and portrayed by Michael Chilkis, the strongest member of the superhuman team packs a pummeling punch with any enemy that stands in his way. Dwayne Johnson’s unique humor mixed with his serious bravado is a perfect fit for the character who has a kind and goofy but, also at times, determined personality. All MCU fans should keep their fingers crossed that he is the one who plays this role when the retooled Fantastic Four movie hits theaters in 2025.

If the rumors are true about The Rock already finalizing a deal with Kevin Feige and the other executives over at Marvel Studios to be in a major character role, this will be a defining moment for the actor going forward, and movie audiences will surely be excited about this new chapter in the MCU.
