Whovians, rejoice! According to a Tweet from the official BBC Doctor Who Twitter account, filming has officially begun on Ncuti Gatwa’s debut run as the fifteenth doctor, meaning the actor has finally stepped off of a sound stage into his first TARDIS to begin filming the next season of the fan-favorite series.

Alongside a behind-the-scenes video of a clapperboard showing the already confirmed director Dylan Holmes Williams and an image of the TARDIS, the Tweet reads, “Action! Filming has officially begun today for the next series of #DoctorWho.”

This will mark the 14th series in the Whoniverse since its return in 2005. However, although it was first believed that Gatwa was to be the fourteenth doctor taking over the role from English actress Jodie Whittaker, it was later revealed that was not to be the case. Instead, the incoming doctor will be playing the fifteenth doctor, taking over the role from David Tennant, who was surprisingly unveiled as the fourteenth doctor.

Collider reported that Gatwa said that what makes his Doctor special is he is “full of optimism and hope, with a fierce sense of right and wrong. They are clever and courageous. The Doctor doesn’t carry any weapons, just a sonic screwdriver for fixing things and getting out of tricky situations. They’re full of adventure, running towards danger. But when they are fatally injured, they can regenerate.”

Millie Gibson Will Join Ncuti as Latest Doctor Who Companion

     BBC

It was announced in November that actor Millie Gibson, 18, will be the latest companion of Doctor Who. The young actress will play the role of Ruby Sunday.

Gibson is best known for playing the role of Kellie Neelan on Coronation Street, a popular British soap. As a young actress, she picked up plenty of praise for the role, even winning the Best Young Performer Award at this year’s British Soap Awards. This puts her on the same career trajectory as many other fan-favorite British actresses such as Jenna Coleman, who transitioned from a popular British soap to playing Clara Oswald in Doctor Who.

Doctor Who will air on the BBC in the UK and Ireland. However, for Whovians in other parts of the world, they can catch new episodes of the series on Disney+
