A24’s upcoming film Bodies Bodies Bodies may be the cheesy, campy horror-comedy some audiences are craving. The film will be released on August 5, 2022, and had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 14, 2022. The film’s trailer promises viewers a lot of blood and laughs, while the Bodies Bodies Bodies movie poster assures us that the characters are not in a safe space.
The horror comedy’s synopsis is as follows:
Written by Sarah DeLappe but based on a story from author Kristen Roupenian, Bodies Bodies Bodies features a talented cast that includes Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give, Dear Evan Hansen), Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, The Bubble), Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby, Call Your Mother), Myha’la Herrold (Plan B, The Tattooed Heart), Chase Sui Wonders (Daniel Isn’t Real, Generation), Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live, The Suicide Squad), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, Captain Marvel) and Conner O’Malley (Palm Springs, Joe Pera Talks with You).
“When a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game goes awry in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong.”

When speaking with Collider about starring in Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bakalova stated,
Here is why Bodies, Bodies, Bodies may just scratch the campy itch for genre fans.
“I was scared to be a part of a horror movie because I’m scared of horror, but A24 horror movies are something different. Plus, I think at the end, Bodies Bodies Bodies feels more like an R-rated comedy because everybody brought their funniness in a way.”
A24 Knows Horror
A24
A24 is an independent entertainment production company. While it started small, the company quickly grew more mainstream after its first original production, Moonlight, won an Academy Award. It is known for pushing the boundaries of storytelling and visuals compared to any other studio or production company. According to GQ, who interviewed famed directors working with A24, they “go to make deeply personal films unmolested by studio notes or clueless executives.”
As Bakalova had mentioned in her interview with Collider, A24 films are known to be more than what they initially seem. The company produces more mainstream films such as The Bling Ring and Spring Breakers and bigger box office hits like Everything Everywhere All At Once and Uncut Gems. But it also produces niche genre films such as Ti West’s X.
The film was released in January 2022 with a cast that includes Mia Goth, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, and Jenna Ortega, and was both shocking and bloody. A24 also released Ari Aster’s Hereditary and Midsommar, both critically acclaimed horror films due to the horrifying content and the twists in the story. The company does not hold back on the shocking and the unusual, giving filmmakers a place to express their creativity that other studios may pass on. Any horror movie produced by A24 is guaranteed to give viewers an unsuspecting journey with an ending that will have viewers talking. Every horror fan’s dream.
“Mean Girls Meets Lord of the Flies”
The term “camp” when it relates to movies is described as absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a usually humorous way. Based on the trailer and knowing A24’s reputation in horror, Bodies Bodies Bodies will undoubtedly be this summer’s horror comedy. It’s been rated 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics agreeing that it pushes the boundaries of the social aspect of being a Gen-Z. And because the cast mostly has a comedic background, it’s bound to bring more laughs than scares. In a sense, it’s more of a comedy film with gore versus the opposite. The film’s been compared to Jennifer’s Body and the Scream franchise.
Bodies Bodies Bodies is directed by Halina Reijn, who discussed with Entertainment Weekly the process it took to create the dark comedy. An acclaimed Dutch actress, Reijn describes the A24 film being “Mean Girls meets Lord of the Flies.” Bakalova adds about the film’s premise:
Because of how the world works nowadays, everything is internet-based: finding work, friends, and dates is almost always through social media.
In the case of Bodies Bodies Bodies, what happens when you learn the truth about someone outside the internet? And while it is not the first nor will it be the last film to speak on this topic, this A24 film will surely push the limit on how Gen-Z interacts with social media and the dire consequences it can lead to.
Bodies Bodies Bodies comes out only in theaters on August 5, 2022.
