The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix original series first released in 2019, which just had its third season released in 2022 and a fourth and supposedly final season coming later. The original media is based on a comic book series written by Gerard Way, who is mainly known as the singer for My Chemical Romance.
The series follows a group of superpowered individuals born under strange circumstances and adopted by a mysterious man who raised them to use their powers for good. But the man’s rules and structure had many of these kids resent him as they grew up, leaving the family behind to pursue other passions. One member of the family, Klaus, has become a fascinating fan-favorite.

Who is Klaus in Umbrella Academy?
Netflix
Klaus is Number Four, as each child was given a number before they had a name. His robot mother gave him his name, but his adopted father prefers to keep calling the children by their assigned numbers.
Klaus is a bit goofy if looked at from a glance; some would deem him to be a hippie. But, in the end, he is simply someone who is very in touch with everyone around him.
Klaus’ Power in Umbrella Academy
Klaus can see the dead, talk to them, and bring them forth, manifesting them into physical beings to fight for his causes. At the beginning of the series, we see Klaus being afraid of this gift, fearing the dead people he could see. Because of this, he constantly drank or did drugs, as it would keep the spirits at bay. The viewers see Klaus’ struggles, from devastating substance use to not accepting himself, and immediately sympathize with the character.
Later, Klaus’ adopted father says how disappointed he is in him, as he feels Klaus, out of all his children, had the most potential and did nothing with it. The father being disappointed in this character is a constant in the show for the majority, another aspect many viewers relate to.
Because of Klaus’ drinking problems due to his fear of the dead, his siblings often treat him like a child or a bother. They do not think of him as having good genuine ideas or opinions until later in the series after he proves himself as an equal contributor to the team.
Klaus is undeniably powerful and has room to grow even more as the series continues. However, as of now, he is not near the most powerful sibling in his family, and he still has a way to get on the level of some of his family members.
Klaus’ Personality
Out of all members in The Umbrella Academy, Klaus cares about his family perhaps the deepest. Out of all his siblings, he is the one who most often checks in on everyone or is there for someone who needs him. He helps Luther through his heartbreak, bails Allison out of jail, is a companion to Diego, and doesn’t treat Victor (Previously Vanya) like a nuisance when all his siblings did.
Klaus is the one to break the tension with humor, never the first to start a fight. But, on the contrary, he is often the one trying to make peaceful solutions, even if everyone ignores him in his attempts at solving problems without violence.
Klaus’ Sexuality
Klaus’s LGBTQA+ reveal early on in the season had the community accepting him openly. The viewers loved the story between Klaus and the love of his life and his quest to try to save him. However, when it failed, we can see the heartbreak in his eyes; for the first time in his life, agreeing with others who said he screwed up. It is the most tragic love story in the show, as he is the only one who did not get a happy ending, instead a bitter-sweet one, having to accept that the time he had was beautiful, but he cannot stop his lover from dying.
Why Do People Love Klaus?
Many viewers expressed how they related to the character of Klaus who, in a family of outcasts, still felt somewhat of an outcast. Yet, the interesting thing about this character is that even with the apparent outcast aura, he fits in anywhere he goes. He is confident in walking into any room and fitting in, in some way, shape, or form. Klaus, with a very supernatural and fictional backstory, is the most relatable character in the series. While other characters have relatable plots and character arcs, Klaus’ story is so sincere that the audience immediately loves him.
The other siblings, once leaving the family, have experiences the average person would not experience. Allison becomes a movie star, Luther goes to the moon, and Diego fights crime as a vigilante. Klaus, on the other hand, is a depressed character who deals with natural human issues like substance use and a fear of death. Even this starting point allows Klaus as a character to be more grounded in reality in a supernatural show.
You’re given the characters’ personalities from the very first intro scene through music from the classic musical Phantom of the Opera, done in a medley. When Klaus is seen on screen, the music is soft and gentle, playing Angel of Music. It’s a perfect choice for this kind-hearted, complicated individual.
